The Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia has been reduced once again, this time the event will take place over just one day, with a route of over 240 kilometres to be raced on February 23.

The event has seen a reduction in stages take place in recent years, going from five stages in 2010, down to three in 2011 and last year, just two - a time trial and road race. The race, like much of Spain, has been hit with financial concerns.

  • Ha, Spanish 1 day race. Could actually make it more interesting.

  • Commented on this in another thread. I hate seeing these races with some history and feel of place, being decimated.

There won't be many Spanish races left soon, though some might see this as a good thing...

Spain has got itself into a right pickle. I'm amazed it's still happening at all to be honest.

Pais Vasco and San Sebastian (which have a far more glittering history) nearly disappeared last year.

If the Vuelta wasn't part owned by ASO i'd be nervous about it's future. I can still see it being trimmed down at some point though, maybe by 2015 when riders start complaining about having 21 consecutive summit finishes.

    Any coverage?

I'll be too busy trying to find a working stream of Het Nieuwsblad anyway. The real racing is upon us.

  • Very very pleased that Navarro won this. Always a huge relief for a rider after moving to a new team. Codifies must be chuffed. Valverde 2nd, Mollema 3rd.

Hopefully this marks a new start for Navarro and we can see some great things from him now he is allowed to ride for himself.
