Old Bottom Bracket Type - Help!

A few years ago my dad bough an Apollo Slant from Halfords, nothing special. However the square tapered bottom bracket has worn and the crank has fallen off and as the designated home mechanic I have been given the duty of repairing it. However, the BB is the traditional external or cartridge; here's a picture of it:

I took it to my LBS who were mostly unsure of it and said that it was very old, so my question is does anyone know what type it is, what tool I'll need to remove it and where I can get one from?

Many thanks!

    find a new LBS

    still fairly common

    its a bit of this http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-hel ... et-service

    and other bits on Parktools

remove lock ring. unscrew cup (catch balls or cage) same the other side. threads are as normal.

  • I would have thought that most bike shops would have the tools to take that out, however your best finding a shop that does have the tools, or to break out an adjustable spanner, a screwdriver and a hammer.

To do the job you'll need about 4 difference tools.

    You'll need:
    This: http://www.parktool.com/product/crank-and-bottom-bracket-wrench-hcw-5
    This: http://www.parktool.com/product/crank-and-bottom-bracket-wrench-hcw-4
    This: http://www.parktool.com/product/adjustable-cup-wrench-hcw-11

And then this: http://www.parktool.com/product/bottom-bracket-tool-bbt-22 to put a new cartridge style BB back in.

Again, you could use a screwdriver and hammer and a spanner, but it'll be cheaper to get a shop to fit a new one.

If you want to do it yourself you can find the info here: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/adjustable-type-bottom-bracket-service
  • Just noticed that your crankset is still on so you'll also need this: http://www.parktool.com/product/crank-puller-for-square-taper-cranks-ccp-22

I would definitely find a slightly better LBS that has the tools.

Don't say that I've just asked them to fit a fork and build a wheel for me D:
They did show me a tool that it might be but even then they weren't sure. If I'm gonna need multiple tools then it isn't financially advisable to buy them all as I'll probably only need them once, I just didn't want to lug it all the way there. Thank Guy, I have the tools to fit a regular cartridge BB and fit the crankset so no problems there.

I have the tools to fit a regular cartridge BB and fit the crankset so no problems there.
Then get agricultural on it and get it knocked off and fit a cartridge type.

Agreed, if you've already got the tool for a new cartridge type then you should be able to get the old one out (with extreme care) with a 12" adjustable and a screwdriver. Getting the crankset off may take a while without a puller though.

you forgot the hammer to get the lock ring(s) moving. when used with a Screwdriver oopps drift. ;)

I do have an extractor as well, should of said. So how would I get it out using a screwdriver, hammer and such?

  • It might be worth going through your dads toolbox/draws. It's not uncommon for those crappy pressed metal tools that used to come with bikes to have a C spanner on it somewhere. Or you could just put the edge of an old flat head screwdriver into one of the notches & drift it around with a hammer.

To remove it, loosen the lockring (hammer and screwdriver) and then undo, then remove the cup using a large adjustable or suitable sized spanner, you can then replace it with a cartridge of the same axle width.

This design is very common and was still on reasonably OK bikes until about 2000 (like my 1997 Gary Fisher Piranha), most BSO's still use them as well, shocking your LBS said what they did, unless you got the spotty teenager who'd never seen one!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I did indeed get the spotty teenager, he even asked someone older who still was not 100%.

Thank you for your help guys!
