OT: London Indian's

I know this is OT however being there are a lot of London peeps here.
I am in London for about 4-5 days from Sunday onwards for business/pleasure. Looking for a couple decent Indians to visit. Nothing to fine dining. Just good old 'English' Indian.
Ideally due to time contraints Zones 1-2. Suggestions guys? There are so many out there....

If you're in SW3, I always used to enjoy the Star of India on Brompton Road. If Reza likes you, it can be entertaining to say the least...Location: ciderspace0

No not brick lane, cheap commercial rubbish.
My favorites, although only the bottom one is a classic indian, the top two are fine dinning, they are worth it but don't go there after 8 pints as it will just appear expensive. Dishoom is self styled "Bombay Cafe" no reservations and yuo have to queue so get there early, food is exceptional and is Indian in a tapas style share everything way.

Thanks guys. Well I am located around Hyde Park area, but jumping on a Tube for Zones 1-2 is fine by me. To be more Specific as Hyde Park is massive. Paddington side.
Been to Brick Lane many times and to be honest never been impressed. Cheap yes! Decent not really. Will look at all these options so far.0 -
There's loads of Indians you can see. Most of them on the top floor flats around Soho! Some in East London too!
As for the restaurants, Gaylord is one of the best restaurants in general and the best Indian Restaurant I've ever been to.Food Chain number = 4

Some good recommendations here, so I won't repeat.
Avoid Brick Lane though unless you're really on a budget or you're in the area for something else anyway. Its a bit underwhelming and usually swimming in ghee.0 -

Another big NO for Brick Lane. Agree with JG re Tayab's.
IMHO Milbank Spice in Victoria is the best in SW1 (it's nothing fancy at all), you can go for beers in the excellent Cask first.
Cinnamon club is good, but it's rather 'fancy'. Depends what you want from a curry I suppose - I like your basic chicken Madras!

Can't believe the pedants have let the grocer's apostrophe slide. Best I can do is Ma Goa in Putney, but that is right on the outer edge of Zone 2.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

I hear their Aloo Ducky is to die for, there's no poonani on the menu though.
I can highly recommend this place. 'Worth the journey' from anywhere they say. And they're not wrong.0 -
I had a really good night here lately, very central, as for Gaylord, I work around the corner, it is good, but pretty pricey for a curry. If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.0

Chutney Mary on New Kings Road is pretty good, and has the distinction of being the only restaurant with a bona fide SCR col named after it...Pannier, 120rpm.0

Veeraswamy in Regent St! But don't have something like a tikka masala, ask the waiter for a recommendation perhaps.0

Lovely thanks guys. I will have a little Google and pick a couple.
Plenty to choose from.0 -
It's Zone 3 but the Sree Krishna in Tooting is amazing if you like Keralan food
or the Lahore Karahi if you prefer Pakistani - it's a basic set up but the food is stunning (or was about 2 years ago)2015 Cervelo S3

The chef from Tayyabs left 3 years ago and set up a restaurant around the corner with exactly the same menu called Needoo. This is superior to Tayyabs. It is also BYO.

Great stuff.
I think we are going to try the one round the corner from Tayyabs if you mention that is better as all the raving reviews are from a few years back.
Also will give the Bengal Lancer a crack.0 -

You won't regret that. Giles Coren's review of Indian eateries in London mentions all the great establishments and then goes on to add something like: "And then of course there is the Bengal Lancer in Kentish Town, which is in a league of its own."Ben

Southall is the best area for north Indian food, unfortunately it is not served by the tube and you have to get off at Ealing and get a bus.
Among the Southall amazing indian restaurants, my very favourite is Madhu's.
http://madhus.co.uk/
Prices are very reasonable, quality is outstanding.
Brick lane is OK, but hygiene in those kitchens is a hit and a miss, while Southall restaurants are spotless and the quality of the food is miles ahead.
Much more spicy though...left the forum March 20230 -
We ended up in Needogrill and the Bengal Lancer. Both were fantastic!!! Very different to each other but both great.
Had a cracking night out in both. Although Sunday night we ended up in some club half way along Brick Lane which meant we got to eat some Salt Beef Bagels (Wasn't even hungry!!) and a very hungover Monday morning at work.0 -

Glad you enjoyed the Lancer and relieved my recommendation didn't let you down! Did you head anywhere else in Kentish Town? Any of the pubs?Ben
