i'm looking to to my first sportive and just want any recommendations as to what sort of a distance I should pick; also can any one recommend any ones to pick.

I would say you could manage the 100 mile sportives fairly easily if you regularly do upto 80 mile rides now. Maybe there are sportives that offer longer distances but most I see are upto 100 miles.
Where in the country are you based ? And how far are you prepared to travel for one? I am midlands based and there are plenty to choose from.
