Deep section clinch

So people. Help needed. I'm up for some new deep section wheels. Low budget (£500ish) and have got it down to Shimano RS80 c50, Planet X 52, Vision T42 and American Classic 420 Aero 3s? Any thoughts/experiences? Planet X have won lots of praise but is trusty Shimano/FSA Vision a safer bet? Advice greatly received

Shimanos are pretty bomb proof, I have the dura ace 50 version and they are just bombproof. These ones I wouldn't think are much different.0

RS80's Great wheels for the money.0

I have the AC and have to say that they do feel light (although not 1560g as advertised) and spin nicely.
They are very stiff and due to the low spoke count do ride quite harsh though (or you could say you get very direct feedback from the road).
They were a revelation compared to the RS20's they replaced and I have not had any issue with them going out of true.
However since then I have seen the light and handbuilts are just lush in comparison - like riding on air.Yellow is the new Black.0 -
I also have the 420's, and rave about them.
I prefer them to my Zipp 404's, They are a great choice, light fast and stiff.0 -
Unless you have taken up TTing in which case you're best off going for tubs then why bother with deep section wheels? Unless of course a manufacturer is going to pay you for all that extra advertising space? Far better to buy some shallow section wheels, either factory(Elites or C24) or handbuilts. You'll probably be faster on them anyway.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Why not just answer the question ? If he wanted shallow sectioned rims im sure he would of asked.
Maybe the guy just likes the look deep section rims regardless of whether they are beneficial to him performance wise or not.
He does not need to justify himself to anybody.

The majority of cyclists who buy deep section wheels, buy them based on looks and I think this is the best criterium of selection, because any other performance claim is frankly risible. I have never felt a rim's profile was helping me reach a certain speed or maintain it, as much as a slight change in light breeze direction does.
So, my advice is to buy the ones you really really like, as they will be the ones that you will love to ride... the ones that are ugly but with good reviews are never going to be good for you.
The Mavic Cosmic Carbone success proves my point quite well and of course for a light read, have a look at this article on my blog

Well I'm sorry for causing a stir! I had Cosmic Tubs, didn't like the tubs bit but lived the ride of deep rims. I do have 'normal' wheels so I will have the choice. I noticed a big difference on deeps in the ride/speed so forgive me a luxury item, thanks. Thanks to all others for great advice! No Planet X people out there??0

The PX wheels came out 'best in test under £1000' last week in one of the mags.
I'm happy with mine - they seem as fast as my mates 5x more expensive ones anyway.0 -

Fine by me, but Cosmic tubs are a different ball game from what I was mentioning or you have shortlisted... there is a pound of rotating weight difference... that is significant I'm afraidleft the forum March 20230 -

Hey Ugo, watch that predictive text! (criterion)I may be a minority of one but that doesn't prevent me from being right.
