Anyone else building one of these lately? I'm almost finished. Need to put a saddle on it/swap over my reverb post, and shorten some hose.

Would like to thank everyone who helped in my various question threads while I got the bits together. Too many to go through individually without risking missing someone out!

No one recommended a saddle then

Haha. More that I've already got one, just not bothered putting it on yet as I'm gonna swap the post as well. And I left a bit of that post in the shed by mistake and it's cold and dark out there.

That is without doubt the sexiest frame I've ever seen especially in Gulf colours. Very jealous! I think they're sold out now so obviously plenty of other people thought they looked good too although I doubt you'll bump into anyone riding one.

Good choice on the colours! That's the first one I've seen outside reviews and previews.

Doesn't it deserve a 160mm fork though

I'm hoping not to see too many others around, it's true. My SB-66 was "exclusive feeling" for about a week, now around Surrey Hills it's a rare ride I don't see at least one of them. And that's the bike I run a 160mm fork on so the Shan's gonna be slightly more mincey, at least to start with. It's only 10mm less travel still.

I do like these frames, such a shame I hadn't really heard or read anything about them before I bought the 456, these so nice!! If possible could you weigh it when you're done? Interested to see how it turns out :)

I was close to getting a C456 myself, and then a pub conversation and looking at pictures solved my dilemma (and blew my budget). I'll get a luggage-scales weigh-in done soon - not expecting anything particularly light since it's an L frame and quite hefty steel. But still compared to what I'm used to it ought to save a bit.

I love it when bikes are built in the living room!

I have also been sure to thank the wife for tolerating it being there for a week and a half (so far)! Man I wish I had a garage and stuff.

Hrnng, having chainline issues with that guide. And a few other things. Finally admitted defeat and left it in the capable hands of Pedal and Spoke to finish it properly!
  • Haha, looks stunning & sure will be even better when fully up & running :-)
  • 8453988546_c2755220ca_c.jpg

Finally got it sorted. Oh boy it rides as good as it looks too. I'm actually feeling a bit ill (any half-decent climb left me coughing those horrid lung burners) and my shoulder is still wrenched from a near-OTB in Forest of Dean. Still had a great time on the quick shakedown ride I just had.

Hats off to Pedal & Spoke's Fergus for sorting out my chainline issues, now has a Blackspire Der Guide on it instead of the MRP I'd originally got. The whole thing seems to just run completely silently - until some mud 'n whatnot gets up in the brakes anyway. Can't wait to ride it again now.
  • looks like a bit of a beast that. great colour scheme with some nice looking components aswell. have a good time giving it some grief!

  • That may be one of the last standard-sized orange lizardskins chainstay protectors in the UK I think, had a hard time tracking it down :-)

Other things in case anybody cares:
Fork: Rockshox Revelation RCT3 150mm tapered
Wheels: Pacenti TL28 on Tesla hubs, Bontrager XR4 TLR Team Issue tyres (2.4 front/2.2 rear)
XT brakes, discs, cranks, cassette and rear mech (which I kinda think is too long, but it runs fine)
    Saint shifter
    Ethirteen guide ring
Race face turbine bars, Thomson Elite X4 50mm stem, Uberbike ODIcopy grips
    WTB Rocket V saddle.
Right now, some kind of Race Face post, but that should be getting switched for my Reverb when I can be arsed. Also considering buying a KS Lev as I like the idea of not having flappy cable to worry about. And need to try again with tubeless as that flopped first time round, don't think the rim tape they came with was up to the job.
  • Love the colour combo on your frame. Nics specc'd hardcore hardtail.

    Nice one

Looks lovely, really want to try one of those, needs bigger forks though! ;)

  • I was thinking about this last night, and I'm really not sure I agree, cuz 36s look a bit OTT compared to the slender steel tubing, from a purely aesthetic viewpoint at least. Maybe there's a compromise option, I see a few on Facebook have been specced with BOS Devilles. Given that I got that fork brand new for about £275 I'm happy for now :-)

On the other hand, I did get a few pedal strikes on the test ride, so maybe I need bigger forks to get that BB up a touch more. Or slimmer pedals. Or better riding skills, but surely not that, right?

It's optimised for 160mm I think, I'd stick a bigger fork on there if it was me. Not to mention a bigger fork will add a bit of extra stiffness to the front end, that bike is designed to be ridden hard!

  • "This frame is designed for a 150mm to 160mm front travel fork and for an aggressive use." they say. I'm happy enough for now at least, nice to have the option for later though.

  • I got the headset with the frame from PP, but got my BB from Enduro Fork Seals in the USA. Looks like you've a nice build going too, update when you get it on the trails!

my Lev has been faultless so far, the cable neatness was what swung it for me also. i suggest you order it from zee germans though for cheap.

  • Thanks. I might, but even at their prices it's quite a lot more than a Reverb goes for with a bit of shopping around, I'm wondering if I can hang on and get better discount. Probably I'll just be impatient. Which German did you buy from?
  • mine came from bike-discount.de. think it was around £240 with the delivery

  • Huh, they don't let you send Levs to the UK. And all the places with similar price have long lead times on a 30.9mm 125 drop version. Bah!
