Come on people. Get off them turbos, get them leggings on, the over shoes out and the neck tube on and get out there! Got a nice 33mile ride in today. Some of the roads were inaccessible but the main roads were fine. Was a bit chilly and had a barstuard of a head wind on the way back but couldnt help but smile! Definately better than looking at the garage wall

Pretty hard to get off the turbo with this storm. Even trees are falling. Good ride though0

Sorry it was a bit snowy around here for the road bike:

 Jeesus! Fair point well made!0

It's all fine, till you end up hobbling home with a broken hip0

Agree totally, except the chap with all the snow, managed 22 today, and really enjoyed it except the last 5 mile with a really bad head wind. The new buff and overshoes where worth their weight in gold.Cipollini Bond

What he said. I have seen folks on a club ride go down on ice. Took down 4 fast as you like before we could even work out what was happening. One broken collarbone, one bad elbow injury, road rash all round. I lost 10 weeks of outdoor riding last year due to a broken collarbone (nothing to do with ice though) and I am happy to minimise the chance of it happening again. So, turbo for me until temps of 4 degrees or above.0 -

Basically this.
I was out yesterday because the roads were clear (we were even having a bit of a thaw), but today it has not stopped snowing until the last hour or so, and it was horrible wet slushy stuff. So, turbo time.
In the past, I have been very gung ho and headed out in snow storms. These days, I am older and wiser and know what even a minor tumble could do to your season.
It just is not worth it for one ride. A decent turbo session will have more impact on fitness than a cautious ride around in the snow.0 -
+Infinity to not going out when icy.
Case in point here.

It's not big and it's not clever....and your not the first to post about your manly snow exploits either!!!!!

So turbos/rollers have their place. Better that than out for weeks/months with injury and damaged bike.Yellow is the new Black.0 -

I always head off road when there's snow and freezing conditions - black ice is treacherous and spraying your bike with salty water eats components.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Roads clear here in east Cornwall so able to get a couple of good rides in. No way would I go out in conditions that were in any way dodgy. Otherwise it would have been down to the gym for a sweaty session on the livestrong0

Whilst I admit it was me who yesterday posted the subject about bike rollers and what not to watch whilst on 'em, I don't feel guilty for going on them again today! It was very icy and snowing all day in Leicestershire, so no way was I going outside. I was out last weekend with my overshoes and coat and chemical toe warmers and everything, and had to ride ridiculously gingerly on all the frosty and icy lanes. Plus it takes like half an hour just to get dressed for the ride
Anyway, I take my hat off to you for going out in such conditions - though I think you are a tad crazyTrek Project One Series 6 Madone 2010

Ditto. One of my riding buddies lost 4-5 weeks last year due to nasty road rash on the hip. Came off on black ice, he was going in a straight line and the bike slide out from under him on the camber. I've been cautious ever since, fine with the cold but don't fancy losing a month of training.0 -
As much as I'd love to head out, my accident just before New Year proved to me that I should stay off the road when it's icy. Being forced off the bike due to injury is hell so if it's icy I'll only go out on the MTB purely off road where the grip is a little higher and speeds lower or have a few turbo sessions now, and be injury free when those sunny days return!0

no, just cold0 -
Riding recently when a colleague went down, cracked his pelvis, broke three ribs and hospitaIised for ten days due to internal bleedings. When we got off our bikes to help the road was covered in black ice and it was difficult to stand. Great if you can get out but being self employed I cant risk having an accident due to weather conditions, whilst I'm prepared to take the normal everyday risk when road riding in non-icy conditions. So it's the turbo for me and occasional cycle ways on my alternative hybrid bike.0

I just don't see the point.
Unless you stick to main roads, which are bound to be busy.
all the good cycling roads are a state round my way.
The cold doesn't bother me, but it would be slower, as well as an increased risk of crashing. From a training point of view the benefit you would get out of it would IMO be far less beneficially than a good couple of hard hours on the turbo.
From a fun point of view. Crack on!0 -
You know its not fun if you have to force yourself do it.

Tell you what. I'll continue to the ride the turbo and not end my season before it's started with a broken collarbone!0

I used to think that until I ended up with a cracked helmet (cycling, not bellend) and concussion.Insta: ATEnduranceCoaching

I used to go out in all weathers, even remember a car doing a 360 in front of us one time. Wasn't that that finished me off though, it was a series of three seperate accidents involving guys I was riding with, one went down next to me and the last one, the one where I called it a day, was a bit in front and broke a collarbone.
Not a sensible place to be, roads with black ice and cars sliding around.
But we all make our own choices.0 -

Exactly, 3 falls on black ice on main roads and there's not a chance I'm out till it's way above zero,0 -
You lot are sooo bad ass. I got all ready for a ride on Sat, and feeling really ard I set off. Only to fall on ice at the end of my drive. No damage to me or bike, but sneeked back in red faced and hoping the neghbours didn't see.
My main worry at this time of year is the increased chance of a SMIDSY from drivers who either can't be bothered to clear their screens properly or with frozen washers.0 -
I still have at least 6/8 weeks until i have another go on my bike !
I have no interest riding during the winter.Cervelo S5 Ultegra Di2.0 -
Hop over the channel, it was 7'c, dry and sunny in Brittany on Sunday, got in 90km, should have done more really.....0

Rather be safe on the turbo than a knackered body or bike.
The bad weather want last forever!!.0 -
