The rear is fine and the front will get you seen BUT it will NOT illuminate canal path or road in the dark.

For a front light one of these will do (about £27):

There are other models available as well, there should be some reviews of different models on this forum or on other sites. (Similar looking lights vary in quality a bit, I bought this one and it has a narrower beam angle than the original Magicshine light, and is more focussed to the centre).
My last order from buyincoins took 3 weeks to arrive.

I have one of these as a rear light:

Seems to be doing well at handling wet commuting abuse and it's nice and bright.

Or you could look in the Lights sticky at the top of the forum, or the huge Lights thread below.

I can recommend this here. More than bright enough for riding pitch black trails, so will work fine for paths on the lower setting. And then get a nice bright LED rear light to go with it - can be had for a fiver.
  • one of thes for the front,
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-XM-L-T6- ... 9588935%26

and a coupl eof these on the back (ones more than enough, but never have enough!!)

    with budget to spare too!!!

then if you want to go offroading then grab anothr of the front ones for your lid and offyou go!!!!

ive got the flash and flares and they are good lights for commuting in regards to making traffic aware that your there with the flashing modes and they are reasonably bright however i wouldnt recomend them for off road and dimly lit places. they are just not strong enough. the above post recommends the cree front light from ebay, which a mate from work recently bought and it is seriously bright. a good buy.
  • I have both on my winter bike road bike & both are quite good at getting you seen by other road users which in the current foggy & snow conditions are a must for me on the country lanes.

I do live right next to a canal and to be honest wouldn't use the Flash for the tow paths at night in total darkness as its not bright enough. However I have used at dusk time and it was OK, but most of our paths are also part of a walk/cycle route and have good to minimal lighting so might be alright.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

Google it and the first review to come up will be the BR one.
