THE 2014 Tour de France will begin in Leeds with a second stage the following day setting off from York and finishing in Sheffield.

Leeds will host the Grand Depart on July 5, with the stage then proceeding through Harewood, Otley, Ilkley, Skipton, Kettlewell, Aysgarth, Hawes, Reeth, Leyburn and Ripon before the competitors cross the finishing line in Harrogate.

The next day's race will start in York, passing through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge, Elland, Huddersfield, Holmfirth and finishing in Sheffield.

This route is right on my doorstep and we cycle these places every week. Really excited now for the tour to come to Yorkshire

Not the exact routes, just that it would be in Yorkshire.

Really pleased about stage 2, now I just have to decide whether to watch it in Haworth, Holmfirth, Hebden or Huddersfield, either way it'll begin with H :)

No Gragg Vale or Holme Moss! They better get some of those roads round Huddersfield re-surfaced too!

Looking forward to it though. Do you think the teams will be doing training rides round the area a few weeks before?

Yep, from the map it looks like they're climbing Cragg Vale then going left at the top and dropping down into Ripponden to head deeper into Yorkshire, brilliant news and another potential candidate to view the race from.
  • Anyone seen the route profile yet? Any links?

When it hits Rippondon I wonder if it will go through Sowerby bridge or over Greenland to get to Elland? Interesting. Or better still right and over the back of saddle worth moor and drop down to Elland over the big M62 bridge.... Now that is a photo I would love to see.... :D

  • Stage 3 starts just down the road from me so I'm going to be there.

I might even cycle there but I'd hate to confuse people thinking I was a competitor going the wrong way! :D
  • A sizeable news piece about Le Grand Depart on Look North just now.
Bloody hell, it's going to be exciting.
Hope the council get the bloody roads sorted around here. They may have to remove quite a few stupid road humps they seem to take great pleasure at installing recently.

Great news for Yorkshire. If the weather's right, it'll be a "reight gud doo."
  • Quick news bit on Look North then they're back on about the Tour. Gonna be massive and a huge boost for cycling in Yorkshire as well as the country.
Bad news is.......... the council's stumping up the readies to pay for it! Cue the moans locally!

There was a piece on this on BBC Look East and apparently Cambs council isn't paying anything for stage 3 to start there so I'd like to say thank you to the tax payers of Yorkshire! Cheers guys! :D

You'll be taking those sentiments back when an army of us descend upon you and force you to wear flat caps, eat only curd tart and watch endless re-runs of Last of the Summer Wine. Yorkshire owns you now!
  • Brilliant, 8 miles from day 1 route, 16 miles from day 2 route, going to be a good weekend

You are more than welcome to Wisbech, March and Chatteris! And to be honest Peterborough isn't off the table either!

On the map why does stage 2 do a big detour around Oldham?

Because if they went anywhere near the place they'd either decide to go straight back to France or end up running the rest of the stage, one or the other.

I'll go and stay with my folks in Boro to watch stages 1 and 2, then nip back home and watch stage 3. I work in Cambridge - result :D
