Removing/Refitting Shimano chain

I need to take a new HG-71 chain off a bike and transfer it to another.
What do I need to do this properly. I don't mean chain splitting tool, I've got plenty of those and have been fitting SRAM chains for years (with magic-links).
I don't have any kind of magic-link for this Shimano chain though. One of the links does have a black rivet in it. Something tells me I need one of those, but I don't have anything else...

You need the shimano joining pin, but a Power link by SRAM will do.

Don't split the chain at the previous joining pin though.0 -
I have split and rejoined 9 speed chains using the normal links.
Very simialr to doing 7/8 speed chaisn, but more critical.
Should you decide to do it, use a chain splititng tool with the backing bolt, simialr to this one.

Shimano chains require the ampule pin though due to the peening process.0

Rubbish those pins. Just get a stock of Sram or KMC joining links. And buy KMC chains.I don't do smileys.

Presuming it's 9 speed.I don't do smileys.

Thanks - yes, I need to buy one of those pins before I can refit this chain. I guess there would have been one originally which was fitted when the new bike was built. I'm not in a hurry to refit it this chain once removed, I mainly need to make sure I split it correctly (i.e. not at current joining pin section) so thanks for that info. And thanks for others for info on splitter tools, I should be OK now.0
