Hi all, picking up my new Specialized Sirrus Comp Disc on Saturday.

An upgrade from the Carrera Subway 2 I have been riding for 4-5 years.

Do you own the Sirrus, or know anyone who owns the Sirrus? I chose the bike as I wanted something quick, but with discs and this bike seemed to fit the bill. Will be riding 150 miles a week to and from work fro MArch-September, so hoping the bike will cope well

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

    What about October to Feb?

Dont know much about the Sirrus but they get great reviews and you cant go wrong with disc brakes.

  • Got a Sirrus Elite 2011 model and am very happy with it but a wee bit itchy to get a road bike one day.

I don't really have a frame of reference for the Sirrus but it's pretty fast for me. I did get 28mm tyres with it but it's now got 25mm Continental Gatorskins on.

  • Thanks for the feedback people!

Just gutted the weather is looking to ruin my weekend ride.

As for not riding Oct-Feb, I live in Croydon, and ride to Ladbroke Grove, so don't feel comfortable with that distance on the cold dark nights. Its all along busy main roads, and have had a few close calls in broad daylight (even though i always use lights and wear high viz).

The bike comes with 28mm Nimbus with Kevlar protection, but already thinking about upgrading to Marathon Plus's as I am not too fussed on speed, just want something reliable, unless you can stronlgy recommend the Gator Skins?

Just itching to pick up the bike now.
  • Only have experience with Gatorskins but so far.... [not going to finish that sentence, in case of tempting fate].

  • Yes very true! This poxy weather has ruined my weekend plans. Only been saving for 7 months for this bike!

I've been commuting on a Sirrus Elite since early 2010 - it's the best hybrid i've ever ridden (chewed through a few before that). I've put a helluvalot of miles on it. I'm on 23's - Gatorskins - to make it a bit nippier. If you want to change it to a road bike, it's the same frame as an Alliez I understand, so getting some drop bars is all you'd need to do.

Great, great bike, very quick until you're hobbled a bit by wind resistance - I cannot keep up with road bikes on Embankment for example. I'm using my road bike mroe an more though in the summer for commuting for that very reason.

Re cold dark commutes - that will probably come with confidence and experience. And having kickass lights does help a lot.
  • Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it. I decided to have the stock Nimbus 28's replaced with Marathon plus 28's. After using marathom plus's for over 3 years (in various sizes) I decided to go with these as they have never let me down. Ok a bit weighty but I'm not looking to race on the way to work (which some people seem to thrive on) just wanted reliablity

I have now picked up the bike and got myself a moon meteor front light and comet rear light to help persuade me to ride in the dark.... so I'm looking forward to the weather clearing up.

Tempted not to ride until we've had a good lot of rain to ash away the tonnes of salt that have been dumped on the roads!
  • I had a Sirrus Sport Comp for the last couple of years. I'd echo the comments above - great bike and a perfect (for me) step between mountain and road bikes. The only problem I had was the riding position on long rides - I really could have done with drop handlebars for a bit of variation.

I can completely sympathise with you regarding the weather. My replacement for the Sirrus is now fully built up but there's no way I'm risking the roads just yet.

Is that bit in bold really true? I've no idea but could it be something to look into doing, rather than just buying a new bike? I assume the gearing on the Sirrus is 'hybrid specific', rather than being Sora, Tiagra, 105, etc.

The commute for me will be apx 65-70minutes so hopefully won't cause too much trouble, but its the longer weekend rides where it may become an issue. Can I ask did your elite have the small end bars? If so did this not offer enough of an alternative position? I just wasn't ready to commit to a road bike, but see this as a step closer. I'm hung up on disc brakes (particularly for my commute).

Am hoping to actually ride the thing for the first time at the weekend...weather permitting of course.
  • FWIW, my Sirrus Elite 2011 came with bar ends - they are handy.

  • Thanks Oxoman, plan on riding on saturday then giving it a good clean afterwards as there is bound to still be salt all over the roads, then once I start the regular commute I'll be giving it a good clean each week. Many people do not realise how important it is to clean a bike properly.
  • I'd be really interested to hear what you think of the Sirrus, Commuter84. I wrote off my road bike last week avoiding a van turning in front of me and I think a hybrid is the way forward for me with better vision and efficient braking, especially with the discs (I'm 16 Stone). The Sirrus looks very tempting. I'm concerned about the loss of speed but expect the handling in traffic to compensate. I hardly ever use the drop handle bars, resting my hands on the brakes or, worse, on the top of the bars without easy access to my brakes. I commute from Twickenham to Green Park (all year) so it is traffic for most of the way, but I do like to compete !!!

I have a 2012 sirrus elite - I converted it to a road bike because I found a t-bar too much hassle in the daily commute wind. The frame as far as I know is the same geometry as the Specialised Roubaix.

The wheels are rugged but just far too heavy in my opinion - by changing the wheels and cockpit I got it down too 9.5kg - I have an £4,000 weekend bike and the difference between the two is not so great that I don't like using the sirrus to commute (with the upgraded wheels)

Hi there, sorry for the delayed response. Sorry to hear your bike got written off! I LOVE the sirrus comp disc. Been out on it all weekend. Its a pleasure to ride. Seemingly effortless compared to my old hybrid. I'm also 16 stone and the brakes seem immense thus far. Its a quick bike, obviously a bit heavy compared to a roadie, but still (for my needs) very quick. Yesterday i hammered 35km in 1h25 minutes, including traffic, several steep inclines I was made up. The only negative I have so far is that the gears are not set up for steep inclines. i struggled last weekend taking the bike out down the lanes near me. Flat/downhill was a pleasure, however there are a couple if severe inclines and I found myself struggling. It really is a city road bike, so sounds ideal for your commute? If you want any more specifics let me know!
  • Hi Commuter 84
How are you finding the comp disc a month on?
I'm looking at upgrading my commuter (Scott Sportster 55) to a flat bar road bike, and I'm torn between the Comp Disc, the Comp, or possibly the Boardman Hybrid Pro. I'm keen to hear anyone else's experiences with any of the models.
You mentioned the weight and the gearing as possible cons on the Comp Disc - do you know how much the bike weighs?
I know the Comp has carbon forks and is a bit lighter, but cannot find definite weights for either online.

Any feedback and info would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Matt
  • Hi Matt, the weight not so much of an issue, obviously its full alloy, so no carbon components. As for the gearing set up, I'm getting more used to it now, and am setting myself up properly before an incline. Overall I am made up with the bike. I've read good things about the Boardman pro, supposedly has a better spec, so would be worth looking at, I believe there is a thread somewhere for Boardman bikes.

I love the sirrus comp disc though, and feel i made the right choice. Its a stunning bike to ride, and effortless compared to my old hybrid. Its the perfect inbetween step for me as I am sure that next time I'll look at a roadie
  • Thanks for the update Commuter84, it's good to know the bike is good bike to ride.

I'm still torn between the Sirrus Comp and the Sirrus Comp Disc at this point. I think I'm going to go down to my nearest Specialized concept store to get a feel for them both in the flesh so to speak.

    Thanks again

Sorry to up an oldish thread.

I'm too looking for a new bike and this is one that I like the look of, just a couple of questions though.

My last/current bike is a full suspension mountain bike which I only now use on the road with semi slick tyres (it helps me get fit) but I find that rides over 25 miles start to get a little uncomfy. The chainring is 20/32/42 and the rear cog is 11/30. If for example I can maintain 16mph for a decent distance (it's virtually all flat with not many traffic lights on the route I use, how much fast could I achieve on the Sirrus Comp Disc with a chainring of 34/50 and a rear cog of 11/25.

The new bike I'm looking for will be just for the road and I want one that will take front and rear panniers, I take it (by looking at the photo's) this bike will take them?

Will this bike be suitable for a day or two's touring or even a week?

EDIT: Forgot to add, will this bike take front and rear mudguards?

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this will help, but I was looking at both the Sirrus Comp and the Sirrus Comp disc (see earlier thread posts).
I ended up buying neither, as I didn't think either warranted their respective price tags.
I bought a Boardman Hybrid Team instead, a similar spec to the Sirrus Comp but £225 cheaper. (£750 RRP, but Halfords are regularly running a 10% off promo)

    http://www.boardmanbikes.com/hybrid/hybrid_team.html

The bike is awesome, and is fully compatible with mudguards and a rack. I don't have either on mine, but the eylets are present on the frame/forks.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply.

Very nice bike, just not interested in buying from Halfords.

Same, sorry to bring up old post.

I looked at the Sirrus today, and have to say very impressed with not only the look but also the components.

I am looking at a upgrade from my 5yr Trek Fx. The Comp and Comp Disc are what I am looking at and do not know whether I want disc brakes or not, but I know I like the wheels on the Disc.

I was also looking at the Boardman bikes but I also am not liking the service from Halfords, my sons bike was a mess from them, my fault for taking the free set up service. I ended up having to do everything myself in the end.

I would be looking at purchasing from Pedal Heaven in Fleet and although my experience with these guys was with Cycle Kingdon 10yr ago I will buy from them again. Looking after my Trek as we speak. That to me is a good reason spending a wee bit more on a bike, knowing you will have a good team to turn to if needed.

Appreciate the thread has given me confidence the bike is what I need, ok WANT :)

    I have the 7.3.

I needed some brake posts a month or so back and contacted Trek direct, my LBS advised me to. Lets just say the first time and the last time. No help what so ever and quite rude due to the fact I called them direct. So I will buy another brand this time round. Owned the Allez A1 & a Stumpjumper FX so have had my experience with Specialized.

    Sorry, hijacked this thread :)
