I'm after a new set of wheels for my ride, it's between the MAVIC crossmax ST and the hope evo 2 SP on crest rims, what do you people think is best?.

What bike is it for, how much do you weigh and how hard do you ride?
  • It's for an Endorfin VP4 SL 4 inch full sus, I'm about 170lb and like to XC and trails. Sorry about the first post had a few probs and didn't think it went through.

The Mavic's are just too expensive for the weight - though they are designed to be tougher than your average XC wheelset. The Hopes are ok if you can get them for 300 or so, but I am not a fan off the hubs and would be putting my money here:

  • What would you recommend ?
  • Just had a look, very nice but do t seem a lot different from the hopes, I've seen some good deals on eBay on the Crossmax ST but can't make up my mind.

They have 5 times quicker hub engagement than the Hopes.

    supersonic is correct here.
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.
  • Just had a look at some reviews, people are reporting a problem with the rear free hub, apart from the cost what's your tale on the Mavics?

Mavic wheelsets are overpriced, hard to get spares for, and not very light. The best hubs here are the Superstar.
  • OK it seems that the superstar hubs are a popular choice, i've been a fan of hope and mavic wheels for a long time which is why my choice is between these two. i've had mavic road wheels before and they have been excellent, also had hope MTB wheels and they have been excellent too but never had mavic MTB wheels, wanted an opinion from a performance/weight piont of view on these two to help me decide.

Well if you arent willing to look at any other options then I would go with the Hope set out of those 2. Probably lighter and easier to get spares for as already said. But I wouldnt limit yourself to just those 2 sets.
I would seriously recommend the Superstar deals, good price and very good hubs!

As above, if you really must have one of those I'd have the Hopes.

But in reality I'd have neither.

If the choice has to be between Mavic or Hope. I'd go for Hope as the after sales support will be better.

But I'll re-iterate the comments about the Superstar hubs and their wheelset. They are good hubs and Superstar build good wheels. There were some complaints a few years ago but I've heard very little negative comments in recent times. The after sales support from Superstar is also very good.

I had an email chat with Neil about which wheels would be best for me (I went for the Pacenti deal) and I have to say he was extremely helpful. I havent needed any after sale service but my only gripe is there were no free haribo in my box!

Pacenti rims have been good as are the hubs. Dont dismiss them based on them being cheap or on reviews from years ago.
  • OK, thanks a lot I think i will give the Hope's a try what's the worst that can happen?

Nothing bad will happen, you're just over looking better things to spend your money on.

    +1

why are you dead set on hope or mavic?
  • I've had both Hope and Mavic wheels before and had no problems so thought I would stick with these.

So you've said, and that's fine, as long as you're aware there are better things out there. Everyone has answered your question.

As an aside... I really wouldn't bother with the straight pull Hopes, little advantage over the normal ones and more faff.

Suppose you still have a square taper BB and a 7 speed freewheel on that basis!
