I could probably google this, but thought it'd get a more rounded answer here, but what exactly is a reliability ride and how does it differ from, say, a Sportive or Audax?

I'm aware it's a ride of a given length that has to be completed in a given time, but in terms of the type of 'competitor' / directions provided / support given what's the difference?

The lines are all fairly blurred, tbh. I have done all three and there is no real difference between an audax and a road reliability ride, IME. You get a routecard and a time limit (upper/lower for audax, just lower for reliability) and off you go. The sportive has the variation from the other two in that the rides are usually marked....and cost about 10 times as much

Having said that, most reliability rides are run by clubs, rather than individuals in the case of audaxes, so there is generally a more club orientated turn out (club kit, sporty bikes, group riding, etc., instead of sandals and beards :) ).

Only a few rules... one of them being DONT get dropped because you'll end up lost and knackered... well if you dont know the route and area very well..
The Shropshire series starts on Sunday at Bridgenorth.. .. bring 'em on

Hi the gentleman below has pretty much described it..there will be groups for all abilities and a map for each rider if for some reason you do get lost! there is is garmin link on the link if you would like to take a look.

Ah, that makes a little more sense... like an Audax but with fewer beards and panniers, or like a Sportive but with fewer Pinarellos.

The club I belong to runs a couple each year... might sign up for the next one.

Bolsover and District, hoping it warms up! Had a few spills on black ice on some bits of the route so won't personally be out until I'm certain of no ice.

  • Thanks for this. Looks tempting. If the big freeze has ended I might pop over from Chesterfield for the ride.

  • Nearly all my riding has been on my own, I've had a look at the route and normally would be good for 15+mph for something like this. I've also read the profiles of your club's riders which is a bit scary  Will I have a realistic chance of keeping up? Are there any time limits, I'll probably be a little over 3 hours if I include Curbar, although that is based on riding on my own.

The weather for the UK looks to be on the change over the next few days so it might be worth doing a final check on Saturday rather than seeking advice at the mo'. I can't help thinking that the UK roads could be filled with turbo mad cyclists on Sunday, myself included :)
  • Weather is ment to be warming up by the weekend so there shouldn't be any problems..

Expecting a big turnout, see you Sunday

  • Unfortunately we have decided to cancel the Clay cross Reliability ride due to the Weather conditions which would make the event to dangerous...we are now running the event on Sunday 3rd March..So please make that a date in your calendar..

    Thanks Steve

Have to say I admire your optimism but it was always going to be a non-starter based on the forecast.

Hope to get there in March.
