Was browsing the forum last night, saw a thread including photo of a stolen specialized allez. I cant find the thread to message the owner but I have found an add on Gumtree using the same photo to advertise a specialized allez...

http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/specialized-allez-racing-bike-2012/1007134551

Few details before the seller deletes the add, location chambord house London (Near Bricklane, stolen bike lane!!!!) Phone number Trevor 07908 509 280.

SOMEONE HELP ME FIND THE THREAD?

Hold up now Ive had time to think about it, the victims photo is the same as the one on Gumtree, therefore the victim must of got the bike back to advertise using that photo right?

Unless the thief is online and was stupid enough to advertise using the "Stolen photo?"

  • So the seller stole the bike then took the trouble to trawl the internet to find the photo of it before it was stolen? Presumably he didnt have a camera to hand?

"sam" is advertising a trek 7.3 on gumtree and also can be phoned on 07908 509 280...

i'd say that's confirmation that these ads are from a thief selling stolen bikes

You guys are not very internet savvy. There may not even be a bike to sell, he may just be trying to get distance buys. You never know.

I got a reply from the victim, he replied here with a PM. He said the gumtree add is someone selling another allez using his photo? WHAT THE???? How can you be so stupid? He also said he has been to look at the Gumtree add allez and it isn't his but "Looks" stolen? How can a bike look stolen?

Something dodgey is going on here. IM OUT!
  • A bike can 'look' stolen in an advert by having a combination of being;
    - absurdly cheap for what it is,
    - poor or inaccurate description (describing a £3000 roadie as 'men's racer bike' for example)
    - incongruous seller or area relative to the value/cost of bike (is teenager in an inner-city council high-rise likely to be owning a £5000 road bike?)
    - no supporting paper work (You're unlikely throw away your warranty docs and receipt for your 1 year old whatever bike)
    - incorrect sale for type (for example there were some new, still boxed Treks on eBay a while back; a punter cannot get their hands on a Trek in a box, thus seller potentially has come by it in a suspect way)

A combination of these factors is enough to make me think a bike 'looks' stolen

I know its a bit of a long way off, but you can buy boxed Treks from the American PX (Military sales) in Germany. So although its improbable its not impossible it could be a genuine sale. Especially as the PX is so cheap to buy from as they trade in dollars and at a discount for the forces.

So the bike was stolen from near Bethnal Green, and the seller on Gumtree is from near Bethnal Green. Both pictures the same.

So the owner reports his bike stolen, collects insurance money, sells bike, buys better bike or kilo of heroin?????
