Hi,

My cycling trousers have finally give up the ghost & I'd welcome any recommendations for good lightweight waterproof trousers that I can use daily on a ride. I'm a bit nervous about buying without trying !

Many Thanks

Pete Clements.

  • I bought a pair of DHB (wiggles brand) for £30 a couple of years ago. Roll up nicely in my rucky for the commute and do the job when I need them. Frankly, they are cheap enough to be easily replaced when they have had their day. Gore @200 .... don't think so !

Best cheap waterproof trousers? Your legs.

Seriously - skin is waterproof. It's not about being wet, it's about being cold. In these temps I would not cycle in the rain whatever the hell I was wearing, the heat would be leached out of you. At any other temps, waterproofs are just a waste on the legs.

  • personally havent found the weather too cold yet
but would kind of agree that trousers are unnecessary

personally rock full mudgaurds, dhb tights and pro overshoes
ok in heavy rain the tights and overshoes get rather damp but iv got access to a radiator at work so that sorts the problem

id say bulky trousers just make a ride too much hard work

I use Endura Gridlock overtrousers. Have ridden up to 30 miles in them with jeans or work trousers underneath.

Get a bit of condensation, but not too bad although the cooler temperatures may help a bit there. Not as comfortable as cycling shorts or even my Endura Singletrack trousers with the 8 panel mesh liner clipped in, but quite passable.

They will fit over shoes and I can even keep shoes as big as Scarpa Vortex on while putting them on. Have a double cuff at the bottom and can't see any benefit to that, but the zip and velcro keeps the calf section reasonably tight.
  • Endura Superlite for me - they're not the cheapest but have a nice light weight material and have kept the rain and road muck off my work clothes.

Except for touring, when I know I may be out all day in vile weather, i seldom bother with waterproof trousers. That said, the ones I use and like are the Endura eVent 3/4 length ones. Not cheap, but good. Three-quarter length ones are better as you are less likely to overheat while still getting the best coverage.

Have waterproof trousers, when it's cold and wet the last thing you want is cycle with normal lyrcra trousers you start to notice knees getting the chills. Yes you're a bit sweaty with waterproof trousers but better than cold water. Also with the waterproof trousers and overshoes, the run off doesn't go into your shoes.

I wear them when it's heavy rain, I light shower I'll just wear the lycra trousers.
