Hey
Im after a new tyre/s for my 2011 Gt Avalanche 1.0, its currently got Maxxis Mobsters 2.35 front and 2.1 rear and the back tyre is basically bald, so i may aswell replace both at the same time?
I'll be riding them all year on trails such as Dalby, Gisburn and Hamsterley, and the Yorkshire Dales when the weather gets better. I've a budget of about £50-60 for a pair and have no clue really what to go for even after reading the forums.
I was thinking of:
http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k371/a ... ml?mfid=77
for the front
and
http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k371/a ... ml?mfid=77
for the rear.
Will the size difference make much difference to what ive got on and will they give good grip considering i wont be flying around the trails just yet? (noobie  ) Or any other cheaper alternatives that will be just as good?
Thanks

I have a pair of brand new mountain kings for sale. Been put on bike, ridden up my street, then taken off again.
PM me if you're interested in them.0 -
Slightly over budget but do yourself a favour and get Hans Dampfs
You want Pacestar for the rear (slightly harder, longer lasting compound) http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k295/a ... ml?mfid=78
and Trailstar for the front http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k295/a ... ml?mfid=78
not sure on the clearance on your frame though, if the rear is remotely close with the 2.1 then a Hans Dampf (2.35) likely won't fit.0 -
Mountain Kings are terrible. No grip in anything other than dry conditions and I have never had another tyre which pinch flats or punctures as easily.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Thanks for the replies!!
I think at 2.35 may be a bit big for the rear, ill give it a try/ measure with my current front tyre. If it is would you suggest

or
http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k371/a ... ml?mfid=78
thanks0 -
maybe I have missed something but why are you going to buy from there when they are on sale at on-one for around £20?0

RevellRider wrote:The tyres from On-One are the cheaper ORC compound, where as the ones from Germany are the much more expensive Pacestar and Gatestar compounds and tubeless ready
that explains it thanks.0 -
The gatestar Nics are superb, my default tyre now for anything but pure DH trails. Awesome grip, mine seem to be lasting well too.0

Thanks for the replies. Now to wait for the trailsta to be in stock and hopefully the nobby nic pacestar 2.1 to be at the same time!0

So now the prices/ choices have changed and the hans dampf trailstar is £34 (2013 version)
http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k371/a ... ml?mfid=78
so is the nobby nic trailstar at £24 noticably different?
http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k371/a ... ml?mfid=78
paired with a nobby nic 2.1 pacestar at the back, since there is only 4mm clearence so a 2.35 hans dampf set wont fit0 -
Hi
Following this thread as newbie too and tyres/compounds are really confusing me! After following some of the links, there seem to be 3 different compounds, Pacestar, trailstar and gatestar.
Could someone put these in order, say of soft to hard please.
I expect these are specific to schwalbe and other manufacturers have different compound name systems?
cheers0 -
I just switched to Minion 60a front and Ardent 60a rear. So much better then the stock Mountain Kings. Although they were not the sore Willi compound....0

Schwalbe do 4 different triple compound mixtures, that are used on the high-end evo tyres, cheaper performance use a single and often quite hard compound and don't grip particularly well.
Pacestar is the hardest of the triple compounds, so the fastest rolling and longest lasting, but not as grippy as the others. Trailstar is a softer mix, so rolls slightly slower and wears slightly quicker. Vertstar is for DH use and is very soft, so slow rolling and fast wearing, but very grippy. Gatestar is a mixture of all the compounds, you get the supersoft outer tread compound with the harder centre compound so you get fast rolling and super grippy cornering. It's a great mixture and its a shame its only available on racing ralphs and Nobby Nics in 26" and 2.25 size.0 -

Thanks lawman that's very helpful. Gatestar Nics sound the one for me. Surprised at the level of tech available although it has the price to match.0
