On my tourer I have some knobbly tires on my bike for the odd dirt track and such. Though you sound more like a cyclocross type. There's a bit somewhere on the web (it may be a sheldon brown article) which says they'res not much difference between slicks and knobbles but I don't know the deets. All I know is the blokie was crapping it on the ice this morning - saying his slick back tire was going under him - and I barely noticed.
