Sora issues?

Sorry if this appears twice having a computer issue. Is it normal the have to double press the left leaver on a sora group set for the giant defy 3 as I'm having to press twice to get the gears to engage. I didn't have to do this originally but now I do after getting it adjust by the local bike store. They said this is a feature and should have always been there. Any ideas guys and gals?

the sora set i used to have you only pressed once

  • Surely that will be for trimming the front mech.
  • Yes, you might have to move two clicks to change chain ring - the first click is just the trim position.
  • yeah mine was the same.

when I got it from Evans firstly it was just one click (didn't always engage properly though) and as the weeks progressed the chain kept coming off. After the first service they made it worse and the chain came off even more...

...took it to another shop who shortened the chain, adjusted the gears etc and basically set it up as you have it - two clicks to change.

I'd prefer it to be just the one click to be honest, but not if the chain keeps coming off :) (not sure if that was connected though)

I have to click twice and do not understand why. What is the trim position?
  • Basically the trim position is there to deal with situations where the chain starts to rub on the FD as you move into the smaller cogs on the cassette at the back - when this happens you give the left leaver one click to move the FD into the trim position and hence the rubbing is eliminated. The second click will then move you into the large chain ring.
  • I have a defy 3 too. Honestly I belive the shifter for sora is made to work for doubles and triple chainsets. Shouldnt have to double click, got mine setup to work with one click. Keep on top of cable stretch people!
Think of it like this triple chainring bikes don't have 4 position shifter, so a double shouldn't need 3!

No, a double has 4 positions doesn't it? That's what my tiagra setup has anyway.

Use YouTube, Park Tools or your Local Bike shop to learn how to adjust and fine tune your gears. Cables stretch over time and use (that's why most bike shops offer a free 6 week service). As the cable stretches, you will notice changes in your gears.

There are adjuster screws on the cables to tighten them back up and several screws on the mech to make adjustments.

A normal large push of the lever should be enough to shift onto the larger cog, but there is a trimming function as well. To stop the chain rubbing, you can push the lever a small amount to move the mech a little bit, but not all the way. As long as you make a big enough push it should change up in one push.
