Tiagra rear derailleur

Dead simple for some one to answer I'm sure.

I need to replace the Tiagra RD on my bike which is 4500 medium cage 9spd (it's a triple)

4500 doesn't appear to be available anymore. I am assuming the new 4600/4601 is a direct replacement and can be used - I know you can use a 10 spd RD on 9 spd cassette without issue. Can anyone confirm 4600/4601 medium cage is a direct swap

Also what would the 105 alternative be if I were to upgrade?

ta Rob

I can't see any reason why the 4600 (or 5600 if you elect for 105) version wouldn't do exactly the same thing as your previous 4500. Have you checked the Shimano tech specs to be sure?

I have a 4600 RD on my winter bike and a 6600 on my summer and can't really tell the difference so I wouldn't concern yourself too much with upgrading to 105. I'm running both with compact chainsets though so not fully 'qualified' to answer your question regarding a Triple setup.

The derailleur is a straight swap. No point in going to 105. Tiagra is good enough. I am not sure if there is a medium cage or short cage version of tiagra or 105 rd

Out of interest what happened to your current derailleur that requires you to replace it? They're pretty robust and some parts are serviceable.

Thanks folks To answer the question of why - Bike was bought used and after adjusting gears etc noticed a fair bit of noise from the rear cage. When I looked I think it must have taken a whack and the rear cages is skewed out of line. Hanger to the frame is OK. I guess I could maybe swap a new cage in as a part? However part of me thinks just get a complete new rd so I know everything is sorted as the price doesn't appear to bad. Has anyone changed a rear cage only and is it much hassle - I have visions of springs flying everywhere when I look at the exploded diagram on the Shimano site!
