I can't stop looking at the Cervelo S2

It's as if I am obsessed! I own a Specialized Tarmac myself with pretty average components (Shimano 105) so you'd think I would be content with what I have got. On the other hand, my friend has a Specialized Allez and he absolutely adores it. Why do I not feel that way about my Tarmac?

I'm forever on different websites reading about and drooling over the Cervelo S2. I think I may have to buy myself one of these next year.

You can purchase the 2012 R5 frame for £1750 too! Yep, will definitely start saving. I'll probably end up selling the tarmac then anyway.

Man, I know the feeling, I have a Tarmac too and it's a lovely ride but I really want a Cervelo, though an R3 or R5. I just bought some new wheels for it to appease my wandering eye but I'm going to keep saving hard then relegate the Tarmac to winter bike status!

I have a r5 vwd 2012 frameset ready to be built as my new summer bike, I have sourced bits from all over Europe to put on it which are also still in the box and yet like you I'm still looking at new bikes and mine isn't even built yet. It's natural my friend. No matter what you have you will always look at other bikes. Never heard the term window shopping. Ha and I ain't talking about actually shopping but I'm sure you get the gist.

I'm always window shopping. Whenever I'm in Kingston I'm forever drooling over their top of the range bikes (Trek's aside) and always upstairs checking out those Colnago's! What beauties they are! But of course, I want a Cervelo S2 and I want it bad. I've never felt connected (emotionally obviously) to my bike

Maybe it's all down to expectations. We know the Tarmac is a good bike so when it does what you expect you're not blown away by it. The Allez is seen as more of a budget, entry level, aluminium bike; so your friend might be impressed by what it can do for the money. Or if he has just started cycling, there's still the novelty factor.

I bought a new car I always wanted, its that good it's an anti-climax. It doesn't excite me as much as driving a 15 year old Ford Fiesta fast as I could ( 30mph of course ;-) ).

Dude, whatever you buy next there will always be something else you want - such is the folly of man!

Buy an S2 and you ll want an S5 or a new set of wheels or Dura Ace etc etc. Even if you get the perfect bike you ll start lusting after something different...

    NapD,

How differently did the two bikes perform? And what makes you prefer the latter?

Different breeds; I have an 05 Allez and love it to death, but I doubt I'll be upgrading anything for a while. New tires and new tape/saddle later down the road, but currently I'm content.

I have always loved Cervelos though... sadly all the ones I see are being ridden by guys who just had to get it as their first road bike.

The S2 'felt' faster on flat roads but I can't quantify this, especially as I have not used the R3 with the Zipp wheels however there is a not subtle issue that means I prefer the R3, it lies in the headtube/BB. The R3 definitely feels stiffer when out of the saddle especially at the front end. This stiffness also helps with handling on descents, it feels more accurate.
The other big difference is in ride comfort. The R3 is certainly a smoother ride, in fact it feels incredibly plush compared the S2 which was in fact the harshest bike I've ridden. This due no doubt to the seat stays/narrow seat post.

  • I have to say that if I had the wherewithal to buy a truly flashy bike, that might well be my choice. And it's good enough for Lizzie Armitstead...

    nice bike!
  • I got a Tarmac SL in 2007. Great bike, very happy with it.

But then last year, I got an S3.

    7167093944_94b1448481.jpg

Which is a very, very good bike. :D

Not sure how it compares to an S2 as I haven't ridden one of those, it's supposed to be more comfortable down to the different stays. it's definately much more comfortable than my Tarmac. I have also test ridden an R3, which was very good. Prefer the S3 as I found the R3 was very aggressive, very quick. Would make an excellent crit bike.

The S3 seat stays should make a fair bit of improvement in comfort over the S2.

Yeah, probably. All I have to compare it to is the Tarmac SL I have and it's much better over heavy road surfaces. Mind you, wheels and tyres can have as much to do with how a bike rides/feels as the frame.
  • Strange topic to come up, I've only just discovered the R5 last week and can't stop looking at it. Must get saving!

Currently ride a Tarmac and it s great to ride. Terribly bland to look at. The Cervelo has sex appeal!

i still love my S1 a bit harsh but it feels so quick i preferd ridding it over my R3 ended up selling the r3 and getting a steely genesis equilibrium for training/ commuting and kept the s1 for racing/ tting.
i have heard from my lbs that they are about to offer some very good deals on the S2 frame and fork along the lines of the wvd discounts they were knocking out before crimbo.

I've always fancied an S2. Just couldn't justify it, so it remained just a dream.

I kept looking for bargains but nowt doing. Corley's, my local dealer had one in, £1700 last season. Ouch!

Reduced to £1200 in their end of year sale. On Tuesday a mate was in there and kept badgering to get my credit card out. I struggled but resisted. And resisted. And resisted some more.

Good job I did, because today it was further reduced to £999 !!!!!!!

It's now sitting on the sofa in my back room :D

    Nicely done mate,that's a bargain.

I to have decided on the Cervelo S2 as my next bike, mainly as i love the look of them and secondly i have'nt heard a bad word against them (any model).
I have been to a retailer in my area and have been quoted around £3000:00 for a 2012 S2 frame with a Veloce groupset and Mavic Cosmics.

My intial thinking is that i need more money as i would prefer a better groupset if im honest,I currently own my 1st road bike which is a 2010 Bianchi Via Nirone (Veloce) 55cm which ive been told is too big for me as im 5ft 7.

I have thought of sourcing the parts myself for the S2 but im lost as to what size frame and parts although the Cervelo shop said i should be riding a 52cm frame.I would have no idea of stem length or handlebar fit let alone crank arm length's !!!

So im assuming i would need to get a bike fit done to get the correct sizing ?.

I never realised that so much info is needed to get the correct sizing as the last thing i want to do is spend a shitload of money and have a bike that doesnt fit me right...

  • Can someone explain the differences between the S series and the R?

The S is aero does that make it heavier than the R?
