Change Cahinset and Bottom Bracket

CurrentlyI have a Shimano FC-M540 chainset and this is connected to a ES-51-e BB (according to the SHimano website).
I would like to change out both BB and chainset. However it seems the chanset is obsolete so this must mean changing both? Most of the chainsets I have seen have external bearings but the on I have does not. The bb shell measures 73mm
Can anyone suggest what options are available.

First off, any reason to change?

You have the octalink system - plenty of options are still available.

There's a current Octolink model here, which is very similar to the one you have at the moment. And this is the bottom bracket for it.

This one here is the external BB version of your current chainset. This comes with both the chainset and the BB.

I have looked a few options but cannot figure out if changing the bottom bracket to another type (external would) work.
I like the look of the M590 but that has an external BB. Would fitting that not affect the the front mech?

The chainset has to match the bottom bracket. The M590 comes with the bottom bracket you need. It will not affect the front mech apart from adjustment.
