9 speed shifter with a 10 speed RD, the FAQ's by Nick say NO but I cant see why not , I'm sure the cassettes are the same width and the RD will only do what the cable pulling it tells it to do, anyone tried?? :|

    Nope. Different ratios of pull/movement

As above will not work. The geometry of 10 speed derailers is different from 9 speed.

    Shimano:
9spd shifter (road or mtb) + 10spd road RD = Will work
9spd shifter (road or mtb) + 10spd DynaSys mtb RD = Will not work

    SRAM:
9spd mtb shifter + 10spd RD (road or mtb) = Will not work
9spd mtb shifter + 10spd RD (road or mtb) + RD cableguide mod = Will work

As above, no. SRAM/Shimano aren't compatible. Same reason 9/10 aren't cross compatible!

    But, there are exceptions:

9spd SRAM mtb shifter (Attack or Rocket) + 10spd Shimano road RD = Will work.

Other simple mods may exist to make certain combinations of 9spd shifters and 10spd RDs compatible.
