Upgrading Sora 8 to MShift 10

I've had it with the Sora thumbshift levers, they've got to go. I've got Microshift gear on my Felt and I like it, so I'm going to put a MS groupset onto the Fuji. It seems that 8 speed is pretty obsolete out there, so I want to upgrade to 10 Speed. Am I right in thinking that all I need to do this is:

2x10 Shifters
10 Rear Derailleur
2x10 Front Derailleur
10 Cassette with spacer
10 Chain

I want to keep the remaining Fuji own branded crankset (which I suspect is actually FSA as it's identical to the Felts FSA set), until I upgrade that to something Gucci in the future.

Any help would be appreciated, I normally chuck the bikes into the LBS but I want to start doing a bit more myself. 8)

You don't need to do the derailleurs.

It's worth scouring the classifieds for replacement shifters unless you're really hung up on the Microshift stuff. I've picked up a couple of pairs of 105 shifters on here in the past for less than £50 a pair each time.

  • I thought that the rear would need doing at least, unless the Sora derailleur goes up to 10.

The range of any Shimano derailleur is the same. The index gap is controlled by the shifter.

  • Well that's very interesting to know, thanks. Perhaps I'll just look out for some used shifters then although I just looked on ebay and 105 shifters seem to be commanding quite a high price, even used.

Yeah you won't get a good price on fleabay. Stick to the classifieds. It does depends on how patient you can be!

My winter bike had Microshift 10 speed shifters, Sora 9 speed FD and chainset, and 2300 8 speed RD. I wore out the RD so I replaced it recently with 105, but it all worked perfectly with 2300 so don't worry about the derailleurs' or chainset's speed rating. The MS shifters work great, but they're a bit clicky and the throw on the front shift is fairly long. If you can get 5700 shifters for a decent price then they are much smoother and quieter. Looks like you can get 5700 for around £150 or 4600 a bit cheaper.
  • I think I will look out for a set of 105s. I like the internal cable routing. I'll just put them on my Felt and put the Microshift ones onto the Fuji.

silly question, but on a 8 speed sora rear mech, would the jockey wheels be thicker causing issue with thinner 10 speed chain?

No, the inner chain width is the same.
