Almost there, just waiting for my wheels. I've thrown a few bits on the frame to see how its going to look.
What do you think?
Am I missing something obvious?
Pictures!

Nice build. What tyres are you using?
  • Is this a steel frame? What is the frame weight?

At the moment, I'm running on Schwalbe Marathon Plus's until CX time and then will stick the CX Pro's on!

No! The frame is an Alloy that they call Kinesium and weighs in at 3 lb's. The fork is a carbon type and weighs 1 lb.
The complete bike weighs just over 20 lbs but changing the tyres will reduce quite a lot.

I should have guessed from the headset... nice frame, let us know about these brakes... I have the BB7 and it would be interesting to know how your compare

I can't really compare the Tektro's to the BB7's because I have never had a bike with cable brakes before only hydraulic ones on mountain bikes but the first impression of them are, they are very easy to set up and the braking power so far from new pads etc are very, very good. The weight of the brake is low with great build quality and the 160mm discs are excellent and only weigh 100 grams. So, overall, very satisfied.
  • Super nice build!

    Super nice build!

Thanks, but since I finished it two weeks ago, I haven't actually been able to ride it apart from a very short blast around the block due to the horrible weather so not much riding being done in Yorkshire at the moment, just walking and running over the snow covered hills.
Some more pictures from a frustrated rider.

Great bike, very nice frame , can't decide on this or the Racelight TK3 for next build , don't get off road at the moment but with the Pro 6 I am sure I could broaden my horizons and combine a bit of on/off road. Really struggling to make my mind up between these two and the Croix de Fer , which I would build up from a frame to get a better spec . Well done , lovely bike!

Nice indeed, just needs the bars rotating to put the end of the drops parallel to the floor.
    Yellow is the new Black.

Building a Genesis from scratch brings it up to comparison with the Kinesis. It's the right thing to do.

The Genesis is a different proposition, better for touring etc being that much heavier. And the fork is an acquired taste. You either love it for its springyness or hate it for its not being carbonness

I do intend to play around with the riding position at the front end after I get out on it  .
  • You are going to be so so so sad when it's covered in grime. (I wipe my Genesis down every night.............)

I had a decision to make before I built this bike up. I am a mountain biker at heart but with the crap weather/conditions all last year I converted one of my 29er's to a rigid road going bike with skinny tyres and took to the road with a touch of off road here and there and really enjoyed it. I got into riding with a few roadies on the 29er which is why I finished up with the Pro6 as a do it all bike. I will probably use this bike for the odd cyclocross race this year and now, I think I have my perfect three bikes finally. 1- rigid 29er, 2- full suspension 29er and 3- the Kinesis. :D
  • Very nice bike. You must let us know how it rides.

FINALLY, I got to play out this morning on the bike for the first time since finishing it. I found that I just moulded in to the whole NEW TO ME drop handle positions after 1/2 hours of riding and really enjoyed the whole experience, a little bit of a new bike syndrome probably!
The only thing I found quite different/difficult was the braking power, or the lack of it. You really do need hands like shovels to get the power on compared to the mountain bike stuff, but apart from that, I'm still a mountain biker at heart, I really, really love the Pro 6.

The Tektro Lyra's are very average, probably better than canti's but in my humble opinion, I don't like them. I find them under powered and you have to press like hell to get them to slow you down. I am saving up for the Hope V twin brakes and will stick the Lyra's on the forums for sale.
  • It's a great start and I'm sure it's really rewarding to build an entire bike from scratch. Nice job. A couple helpful comments:

    - it's not a cx bike really, you have a compact road crank and CX courses or MTB trails call for a less roady big ring. it's fine if you don't mind living in the small ring when you're off road. I really like how you specced a long cage derailleur to achieve some > 30T cogs at the reat. smart.

    - you must be an ex MTBer; please remove the lizard skin neoprene. it's garish takes away from the purity of the white frame. try some thick sticky-backed plastic instead.

    - Handlebars. Amazing how people set up handlebars. Look at websites like Derosa's or Cannondale's and you'll see how the pros do it. And when I say pros, I mean product designers and corporate stylists and photographers etc. Basically the drops need to be horizontal to angled up 15 degrees. If you have them pointed sky wards, and I know this from experimentation, you're steering input is exercised several centimeters above the upper headset race which feels flexier and like a boat tiller. Try it in a few positions and see what works for you...
    When a cyclist has a disagreement with a car; it's not who's right, it's who's left.

Hi, it's fascinating to see your build on this frame - thanks for posting. I'm about to go the same route with the Pro6 but a little unsure about the best frame size. Would you be able to give your opinion on the right frame for a 6ft guy - any feedback about how you find the overall geometry when commuting / racing? Many thanks for any light you can shed. Cheers.

As your a six footer, you should go for a 56cm frame. I have a 54cm at 5.9 tall and with a 100mm stem it feels about ok, maybe a little long but I have learnt to live with it. The bike is wicked, climbs off road like a billy goat with speed with decent off road tyres. I would suggest you build the bike with your preferred choice of parts but make sure you get your gearing right depending on what you intend to do with it. I went with a mountain bike rear cassette, 34/11 with a 34/50 chainring set up which suits my hilly Yorkshire riding.
    good luck.
