Not long had a giant anthem
X3 2011 and I find the fizik Tundra v2 saddle a little lacking in padding! Can anybody recommend me a new one? I have seen the charge spoon seems to be rated quite highly??
Oh I don't want to spend a silly amount on a new one and ideally I would like to sell the old one on to get some money back.
Thanks Scott

  • I took my fizik (Gobi?) off my Trance and put a Specialized Avatar on. Stopped my gentleman's area going numb which was the main aim!

You can get your "sit bones" measured to find the best width for your err, ar$e too which seems to have paid dividends for me.
2011 Giant Trance Ltd, 2016 Revs, XT bits etc.
  • Spoons all the way for me. When I got a cheap second hand one from ebay to try, it felt painfully thin in my hands. Sitting on it was a different matter, no numbness or pain at all. I bought new ones for the hardtail and full bouncer and have had no problems whatsoever. I think that any saddle will take a short while to get used to your nethers but if you can get your sit bones measured as advised above you are one step ahead.

The Spoon is a pretty firm saddle as well.......sure it's not just some MTFU you need? I love the Spoon, after a few rides it's ace, but for the first couple you know it's no softy choice!

Scott I have the same bike and saddle as you, I did swap my Fizik for a Selle but then swapped back to the Fizik and found it does need to be well broken in and is very position critical, I find it's fine now.

  • My mate loves the fizik on his 29er Anthem, hates it on the 26er - got a spoon from charge and loves it. More than paid for it when he sold the fizik. Couldn't tell you if the fizik saddles were different designs or if his positioning was different on each of the frames, making it more comfy on the 29er. He could also be suffering from a placebo ;D

I love the On One Big Nose. Great value, looks ok, good materials, comfy all day and great for moving/positioning.

I find the big nose gets in the way of my massive obvious. *

    * I have never tried one really but it's almost as silly a name as spoon.

  • No it's an equally stupid name on the basis that these companies give it a name in the first place. But it does have a big nose at least. What does the spoon have I wonder, or the Fizik Tundra for that matter?

The Spoon spoons each of your sit bones....check out the shape of the tops on those funny African 2 post sitting stools....

Quite like Spoons meself they are a fairly safe bet for most people. SDG Bel Air also pretty good. Have a carbon Selle Italia SLR on one bike it looks like a lightly-padded razor blade but is surprisingly comfortable all the flex is in the shell and rails

Thinking outside the box you might want to consider some killer undershorts e.g. Mavic Stratos then you can sit on any saddle. Looking ahead the root cause of discomfort can be due to spending too much time sitting down and using the saddle to carry most of your weight. Try lowering it just a touch so it becomes easier to get out of the saddle and ride like that whenever you can. Most weight through your feet whenever you can.

How many rides? After you start using a proper saddle the muscles over the bone will hurt after the first 3-4 rides (depending on frequancy and length).

Spesh dealers have a sit bone measuring tool, alternatively sit on some memory foam, jump off and measure, or put a ruler across your 'arris, point out your sit bones to someone (you can feel them easily enough) and have them measure it, make sure the ruler approaches in the right orientation!

Specialized Phenom for me - comes in 130 and 143 widths. Get down to your specialized dealer for sit bone fitting.

No one has mentioned the SDG bel air. For me it the best MTB saddle I have ever tried. Saddles are a personal thing but if you are of average build it should work well for you.

Oh the poster above did mention the SDG bel air. Those prices are well below trade. Must have been a clearance line from silverfish.

Biginner, my bone start gettinsore about 15 mins into my ride. I have'nt ridden in months and it is a new bike. I always remember feeling sore from when I did ride 2-3 hours. Stock saddles that come with new bikes are a bit 'bare'. When I pop into have my free 6 week service, I will ask about being measured.
    Thank you

More padding doesn't make a saddle comfortable. The right padding does.
