Miche or Hope for custom wheels

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm getting some wheels built up, and can't decide whether to go for Miche Primato or Hope Pro 3 Mono hubs. It's £85 more for the Hopes, and they weigh 90g less. I've heard stories about the flanges shearing though. Anyone have any thoughts?

I have used both and they are both very good. I think the miche are significantly heavier, but that doesn't really matter. Difference in price is more like 100 pounds. No shearing problems here...
If you want to read a review of the newest Dura Ace 9000, I have just built with those, here on my blog

Hope....for simply buying British.0

I am not sure what you mean by shearing... if it's the spoke chewing into the flange, I have never seen a hub where that doesn't happen. Spokes are made of stainless steel which is way stiffer than the ductile alloy the hubs are made of. A bit of chewing is inevitable and unavoidable if you use J spokes. It has never been a problemleft the forum March 20230

I mean those flange breaking at the drillings and coming away from the body0

Never had any problem like that. Most hub manufacturers recommend against radial builds and Hope could be one of them (I never checked as I never thought of building them radial)... but the world is full of idiots and that could well be the answer. I have seen builds which border shocking... J spokes crossed but not actually overlapped at the crosses resulting in a wheel with lateral wobble rather than lateral flex, spokes of completely wrong length somehow screwed all the way into the nipple, inappropriate and randomly distributed tensions and this from people who actualy pretend to be professionals, not some shed enthusiastsleft the forum March 20230 -
Another thing to consider is the noise. Hopes have a VERY loud freehub. Just search on youtube for Hope pro 3 or pro 2. Me, I love the noise but a lot hate it.0

I think the noise might actually be what makes me buy them in the end!0

Indeed, they use a different pawls/spring mechanism, which is stronger, more durable and louder as a resultleft the forum March 20230
