I'm thinking of rebuilding my front wheel to a better rim - a XC717

Do Hope Hubs need specific spokes or anything fancy, or will I be able to walk into the LBS and just say "lace this" and it'll be fine?

Cheers

If the erd on the rims are the same and the spokes are ok will be just a straight swap

    Which is relatively unlikely.

I'd not go for an XC717 though, very old rim design now. I'd go for a Stan's rim - Alpine or Crest.

It was just what I had on the back so thought i'd match - open to suggestions though so I'll take a peek of both those mentioned above, cheers

Aye, you'll probably need new spokes, most bike shops charge around £1 per spoke and £25ish for a wheel build? Gonna cost you a lot, basically. Might just be better off buying new wheels.

Nothing wrong with the XC717. Stans rims are only worth it if you plan to go tubeless.

Why only worth it for tubeless? The crest for example is lighter, wider, from my experience tougher, and more versatile. Mavic's off the shelf builds, deemax, crossmax etc are worth a punt at the right price, but if you have a choice of rims I see no reason not to go for stans, mavic are way behind in the rim only stakes if you ask me. They need a rim that weighs the same as 717, but is as wide as a 719 or 721.

    What's your current rim?

Usually its more cost effective to sell the old wheel (if it's in good shape) and buy a complete new one.

    Interesting views.

I think (from memory) the current rim is a EX721. Might be wrong. Big issue is it is a rim brake rim and makes the bike look kind of 90's having a weird silver rim brake. Purely changing for that reason haha.

CRC have A Hope Pro II to a XC717 for 114 quid - which is a bit more than I'd like to spend even if I did manage to sell my current wheel for £60 or so.

Don't think you'll manage that. Is your current hub disc?

Yeah disk hub with disk brakes. Just a rim brake rim. Can only imagine it was on sale when the original owner bought it or something.

EX721 was a hefty number for DH/FR. Perhaps that's why the previous owner chose it.

XC717 is a lightweight XC rim.

    Just so as you know.

As for spokes, the ERD on the EX721 is 535mm and on the XC717 its 542mm. My guess is that you'll need new spokes for this swap, the ERDs are too different.

Yeah, maybe. The bike has a XC717 on the rear though, and I'm a very light rider so I'm sure it'll be fantastic on the front.

I would never re-use spokes anyway :) but thanks for the heads up, i can now tell the LBS what ones they need :)
