Have XT wheels which are tubeless ready, but I will be using tubes.

Do I still need rim tape?

I wouldn't have thought so as there are no spokes poking through, but I just wanted to check.

Taa.

No, as you've observed they've got a sealed spoke bed, so no tape required.
  • Brill thanks, knew it may be a stupid/obvious question but needed to double check :D

A friend still swears by a run of electrical tape as sometimes (he claims) the tube can 'stick' to the metal if it's been in a while and tear on removal.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Actually it is more likely to 'stick' to the electrical tape - esp if it is PVC. What happens is that the plasticisers migrate and 'melt'.
  • Thats why you should spinkle some talc/chalk dust on your inner tube to stop it sticking to the tyre/tape
