What I've discovered is that I can maintain a higher cadence so much more easilly than a lower one, at the same power output. After just a few minutes of a lower cadence, higher resistance at 250W, I'm knackered. But I can manage the same power output at higher cadence for a good while.
Isn't that because spinning at a higher cadence uses more slow-twitch muscle-fibre rather than fast-twitch muscle-fibre which relies on glycogen as its energy source?
  • Have been working since December to increase my cadence, as someone who has tended to push a bigger gear with less cadence, an ex racer I recently met suggested higher cadence with less resistance equals less fatigue, plus I want to try racing this season and he said it would help me to respond to constant changes in pace.Hit my highest average cadence of 91 on a ride yesterday for 45 miles and for sure feel less fatigued than normal but had a slower average speed.
Now if I could increase my cadence and push bigger gears like a certain Texan ,that would be something!
