Out on my new bike the wheels are dt swiss branded

Anyone I was navigating through a bad patch of road but then I couldn't swerve past a pothole

I was thinking brace myself, thud as I rode through it and thought oh poor wheel

How tough are wheels?

Come the nuclear holocaust it'll just be the cockroaches scavenging for scraps and the DT Swiss rolling around looking for a purpose.

Depends on the quality of the built and whether they are appropriate for use - hit the edge of a deep pothole hard and you will likely pinch-flat the tyre, in bad cases distort or crease the rim, but that's a rare occurrence. An 18st rider riding a 600g wheel is likely to come worse off than a 9 st rider. Learning to unweight or bunny-hop can save you a lot of damage (and ££). It's a good reason to ride stronger, heavier wheels and tyres in winter rather than trashing your best wheels.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

When the magazines say "bombproof", I'm pretty sure they're meaning conventional ordnance, and IEDs.
  • Tough as nails...

...tyres on the other hand are significantly less tough than nails, so keep avoiding those nails.
  • Check Martyn Ashtons Road Bike Party if you were in any doubt of how tough they are.

Tougher than you'd imagine. I do a lot of night riding and can't always see exactly what I'm riding over when traffic's coming the other way. I have Shimano RS10's and have hit some pretty big potholes, some of them at speed, and one impact so violent I felt that I'd broken my wrist. Worst damage has been a couple of pinch flats when I hadn't topped up my tyres pre ride, and a tiny dent in the rim which I've smoothed out with a file.

A couple of seasons ago during a club ride the guy in front of me came down hard. I had nowhere else to go but over his front wheel, a Mavic Elite, luckily I stayed upright but I was very worried for his wheel. Upon closer inspection not only was his wheel intact and true but it wasn't even scratched!
