I need a 9 speed chain and I'm wondering if there is any point in spending a bit more on a chain because it's not much more between the different chains. are the more expensive chains meant to last longer or is it simply a matter of having a 'brand' associated with the chain such as dura ace or ultegra?

  • After using everything from ultegra to SRAM 1090 on my latest build I used a KMC x10 (10 speed) and can say it was definitely the cheapest chain I have bought and also the quietest . It shifts great just need some good weather to check how it life lasts. The included missing link connector is also great .

I use mostly KMC chains and 9-93 chain is very good. The 9-73 is a bit cheaper and is silver/grey. The 9-93 is silver/silver. that the main difference.

I also use campag chains as they are very durable. In relaity though unless you want to save every last gram a 9-73 chain is all the 9 speed chain you ever need.

And based in Mallorca where rain and grit are less of an issue??? :)

I have found that the most expensive chains tend to be more optimised for weight (hollow pins etc.) and do not last very long.

I use KMC chains as well - 9 and 10 speed (and the one on the fixed). I usually use something in the mid-range and get pretty high mileage out of them.

KMC all the way. I've tried sram and shimano (not the tope end ones though) and KMC are always quieter and have lasted as long or longer. The mid range chains seem best vfm to me (cost/durability/weight), although I do have an expansive one on my best bike for bling factor. I've used 8 and 10 speed chains.
