I am looking for a set up that gives me the option of the car like sat nav set up of mainly just my local area as don't go anywhere else

I've noticed the basic unit alone is say £260 from Evans. Would I then have to buy a memory card then maps ?

If anyone could guide me to what I need in its cheapest form it would much appreciated

If i were you i would wait a while as the new 810 is just around the corner so the 800
    should drop in price.
As far as the 800 goes you will need the card to do maps,or buy the one that already has it as a bundle.

Cheapest way for the 800, buy just the unit from handtec. 2 GB microsd card ebay, say a fiver.
Get the free Openstreetmap and put it on the card. There are numerous threads about these maps.
Alternatively if you do not need all the features of the edge 800 buy something like the etrex 20 or dakota 20.

Used mine yesterday for the first time. Took some serious setting up to get it how I wanted it. Plenty of manual and forum reading and YouTube videos but I am really pleased with the result.

Bought an 8gb kingston sd card off eBay and stuck the open source maps on it. Works a treat. Just analysing some of the HR data this morning from 2 rides yesterday which unfortunately confirmed my suspicion of how unfit I am.

Seriously, great piece of kit though

    Hi Mosa
Thanks for the pm. As I only joined recently, I can't send pms yet but if you want to pm me your email address, I will answer your questions via that route

  • The new 810 will probably be more expensive and I don't think there is a even published feature set yet. If you like the 800 and it has the feature set you want, then go for it. I recommend the performance pack with the cadence sensor and the HRM. I don't think I would get as much use out of the 800 if I didn't have the cadence and HRM kit.

If you want maps, you can buy the UK City maps for £24 from Amazon. I did a lot of reading on where to get maps and sending MicroSD cards off to people and they then upload and post it back to you.

I decided to go for the simplest and manufacturer recommended option. Its been working very well.

The Garmin Connect site is excellent. Very good for route planning and uploading data.

On the flip side, the manual that comes in the box is useless. Best to get the one from the web site. I printed mine out to A5 and managed to squeeze it in the garmin pouch along with the other bits.

If you are only cycling in your local area...do you need the maps? Surely you will know where you are. If not just check it online first and plan a route before you set off.

    Just a thought...

Almost certainly pirated. Just so anyone reading knows.

Pairing with a smart phone for wireless uploads and downloads is nice. Live updates of the weather I'm happy to live without (I'll look at the sky maybe  ). Unless they've improved the display I'm not seeing anything that would make me upgrade from my 800 or not get the 800 on a deal.
