Cassette Troubles

Hi all
I have just received a brand new Shimano SLX HG-81 10 speed cassette for Christmas. After fitting the cassette i took it for a test ride and realized when I applied force to the cranks (stood up pedaling hard) the cassette slips along the splines on the free hub (Shimano Deore FH-M525 VIAM). When i removed the cassette I noticed that there were large gouges in the free hub. I'm looking to invest in a new hub in order to fix this but I want to make sure it fits first. Are there any criteria that this new hub needs to fit in order to operate correctly with this cassette.
Thanks in Advance
Jake

This is very odd with a Shimano freehub as they are hardened steel. The parts are 100% compatible.0

There are silver scratches horizontally across the splined hub. That is what led me to believe that this is the problem. There seems to be a small ammount of side to side play in the cassette when it is attached also. It was only when i pedal hard...0

Much more likely to be the freehub mechanism slipping.0

Is the chain new as well, if the chain is worn it could be this that's jumping? A much more likely situation. I've got lines on all my freehubs, this is just the cassette digging into the freehub body.0

The chain is brand new also. If it is indeed the freehub slipping what do i need to buy to fix this, i take it i dont need a complete hub?0

A new free hub body - but often cheaper to buy a hub and strip it!
Try this:

Then simply swap the freehub body over, and while you are at it, the whole axle, bearings and cones. You'll need some tools though.0 -
Thanks, Just trying to dissasemble my hub but i can't find the 10mm allen key slot...0
-
You need to remove the axle first - this requires cone spanners.0

Yeah, thats all done.... I just can't get to the pauls etc. I have looked at instructions and they say to insert a 10mm allan wrench into the axle cavity, however there is no nut or anything to turn...0

It's deep down - but the freehub body is a sealed unit, are not supposed to be servicable - you can't get at the pawls. Though you can try and blast crap out with GT85.0

The link (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... 8237&pref=) says this hub is 8/9 speed compatible, will it not work with ten speed?0
-
Yes it will, they've just not updated their descriptions. Any 8/9 speed hub will also fit 10 speed.0

So i just got a new wheelset in the end (treat myself) and the problem i have now is i'm still getting this slipping feeling when pedaling hard. I dont's see how as the chain and cassette are brand new (slx cassette, clarks chain) and the cranks and deraileur are only a year old (slx). It's a lot less frequent now there is a new wheel on the back but it's still annoying... any ideas?0

Does it do it on all 3 chainrings? I'd be looking there.0

It's an Slx m665 double and bash, and yes, it is both chainrings. I shall have a check.0

I had this too. Turned out to be a mix of chain line and frame flex. Does in only happen in lowest one or two gears on the rear? Take a look at the chain line when you feel the slippage....my bet is the chain is not straight....this causes the rear triangle to twist a bit. 10 speed setups are quite prone to this due to everything being close (10 rings squeezed into the space of 9). I too changed, all my running gear to sort out this slipping....in the end I made a spacer up to shift the chain rings over to straighten chain line and bingo problem solved. Also helped when I changed my rear axle to 10 mm bolt through to add a bit of stiffness.0
