Hi all,

Newbie here, I hope you can help me with this. For winter bike maintenance which type of lubricant is best to use dry or wet lubricant?

Thanks

Sam

Dry when it's generally dry, wet when it's generally wet

You want the lube that is designed for the conditions you ride in. For wet weather it needs to be resistant to washing off, for dry weather it needs to be less sticky to avoid picking up dirt.

regular cleaning and lubing is really the key rather than spending a fortune on tiny amounts of cycle specific chain lubes. A lot of high performance motorcycle chain lubes work really well and come in better value for money quantities.

I would personally avoid engine oil or general purpose oil as they are neither sticky to avoid washing off or very good at resisting dirt.

I heard a quote the other day that a clean well maintained chain can make 40s an hour difference to a good road rider. No idea how true that is.

I personally prefer dry lube as it attracts less crap in general and offers decent moist resistance. i tend to degrease and re-lube every month...so the whole issue of dry lube being washed off isn't a problem.

i also find most of the time it is moist condition...very rarely in the winter seasons (from now onwards) you get torrential rain fall although the Environmental Agency will tell us otherwise.

I avoid puddles if i can which helps...regular maintenance is the key...
