Bit silly, what gear?

Hi guys, been MTB-ing for a few years and decided to get a road bike to try and get a bit fitter, but am be pulled more this way at the moment! I have a mate who I go off and on road with and he is the fittest guy I know. He swears by big ring up front and big ring at the back and a ver high cadence. Anyone else do this?…
