Touring around Europe

Hi, it's always been my dream to go on a solo adventure and I finally think I've found something worth doing, but I'm in need of some expertise; I've never been touring before and so I need some advice on equipment.

The basic plan is to ride from Somerset to Istanbul (or the other way around or maybe even in a loop) and join up as many countries and historic cities as I can. I'd like to camp out on most of the nights, although I'm not sure whether this would be deemed insane or just fun. Anyway, I'd just like to know how long a basic route to Istanbul would take and what sort of equipment I would need, thanks.

I rode from Sussex to Istanbul a few years ago (summer of 2000) and had a ball. It is a great ride. Any decent touring bike should do you. The roads are not bad. My course took me through northern France, Belgium, the Back Forest and then along the Danube to Vienna (there is a splendid bicycle path along the Danube, by the way) then through ?slovenia and along the Adriatic coast to Greece and on to Istanbul. It took me six weeks, travelling very easily.

I am a writer by profession and funnily enough have been publishing a serialised account of my Istanbul ride on my website - address below - if you would be interested
