Bus drivers & change (outside London)

Was there not a single shop you could have gone to to get change, even if it meant buying the cheapest thing they've got? You get change, the shopkeeper gets paid for a box of matches, the bus driver doesn't have to argue with out-of-towners, everyone's a winner!0

I try to avoid buses.
If I can't avoid buses I try to have the right money,
If I can't avoid buses and don't have the right money I'd offer to toss the driver for it (no that's not what I mean - I meant heads the driver gets the £20, tails I travel for free.)
If I can't avoid buses and don't have the right money and the Tosser is not a tosser, I'd offer to treat the rest of the passengers to a free fare until my £20 was used up.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0 -
See the OP.
Point is, if it was something like a stationery shop, fair enough. It's not going to be important. A bus is. It lets people who can't cycle or drive get places. Hence its status as "public transport". I wasn't being unreasonable. I wasn't asking to avoid paying. I was happy to pay what was due.
It also irritates me when, on refusing to let me board without emptying my wallet, they can't offer an appropriate alternative. "How am I supposed to get to the station ?" Telling me "it's not [their] fault" isn't conducive to nearing a solution.0 -
To be fair, it does sound a little unreasonable. But then if the driver isn't allowed to give you any change and he gets back to the depot with a £20 note in the 'till' (but the total take matches the ticket counting machine, i.e. he's given you change) then he's going to be in trouble for taking money that he's not allowed to take. So I can see why he wouldn't and also why the bus company would want to avoid giving change out.
I suppose it's not a problem round these parts because everyone just knows that you can't get change on the bus so nobody tries it.0 -
Getting on a bus is bad.
Not getting on a bus can be worse.FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future

I thought it was farely obvious.
I expect the rationale behind it is that the bus is less likely to be late if the drivers focus on driving like lunatics rather than messing around with people that don't have the right change. It's annoying certainly, but I assume everyone knows if you don't have the right change then you might not be allowed on the bus.0 -
