Hello all,
I've recently been riding with a few mates that are in to it, and i've had to hire bikes each time. Now I'm thinking about getting a bike of my own... though of course, I've no idea what im talking about. I've decided to get a 2nd hand one for now and browsing some sites today, I see this:
http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1244777/
and this:
http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1232911/
Are these roughly priced OK and which one would be a better purchase? Assuming all other things being equal like their condition etc.
Both are in the price range I want to spend (which isn't quite enough for a new bike it seems), but not sure if they are well priced at all! Any pointers would be much appreciated. I live in the peak district and will be riding locally.
Cheers.
Andy.

I'd look at new bikes if you are a relative newbie - a full warranty and peace of mind can be important. Neither of those look good value to me. Plenty of very good bikes available for around 1k (and less).
You don't need a full suspension bike either, though they can have benefits. As the peaks is mainly XC riding, with a few technical descents, a lightweight xc hardtail might b abetter option to get about.0 -
If you must go full suss consider the 9.1 from Decathlon or the Boardman from Halfords, both would be a better ride in the peaks than those two, but I'm with SS, a lighter weight hardtail would be easier uphil, almost as good down and cheaper or better spec.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

All good advice, but the stump jumper is a lot of bike if you can get a deal on it, you'll probably never outgrow its capabilities. Plus it will be worth as much as either the boardman or rockrider (both great bikes) as soon as they are wheeled out of the shop.0

Thanks for the replies. I do agree on the new bike thing, it would be nicer to have a warranty and someone to moan too if things go wrong. I think the main reason I decided to go fullsus was that on the occasions i've hired one, its been more fun. But that's probably as I'm crap. Which is partly the reason I don't want to stump up 2k on a new fullsus bike, no point having a massively expensive bike if I can't ride it very well. Hence why I started looking at used bikes.0

You don't have to spend 2k on a full susser, some really good ones at 1-1.2k.

Would that be a decent spec for the price? I've seen some quite heavily discounted ones on the net, but I'm not massively sure on what spec is decent etc. And without being able to ride them, it seems a bit of a gamble. A full sus bike for 1k would be ideal price wise, though everything I've read seems to suggest not to bother at this pricepoint and go HT instead.0 -
A hardtail would be lighter, and would be my choice. But as full sus goes that Giant is excellent, frame is £900 alone, has one of the best forks in the business and some solid components.0

The same frame but with a far better shock is £900.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Look at the Boardman range - can't go far wrong with one of those. I'd also have a look at One One or Vitus hardtails.
Agree that a hardtail would be better. Truth is most riders don't need full sus most of the time.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -

No one ever needs full suspension. It's just nice to have.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
"The same frame but with a far better shock is £900"
As in the other thread, the Monarch R on this frame is fine, the RP23 is not far better for this application. The RRP of the frame with the RP23 is £1199, bare frames were £900, but of course, you can get them cheaper in the sales, seen one at £750 with shock.0 -
Saw this in another thread, same Anthem? but 100 cheaper http://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/giant-anthem-x3.html0

Ah yes, was my link too! Meant to say in this thread can be got for £899, absolute steal!0

Bargaintastic, but... If I could stump up 150 more I'd get the 2011 Anthem X4 with fox and shimano kit.
