Does anyone know of any sportives relatively close to Cambridge? Would be interested in trying one out, but no idea what is close to me.

There is a Wiggle one which starts at Newmarket.
Richardson Rumble which starts in St Ives.

or you could do some audaxes - there are several out of Bishops Stortford area in Feb/March and Whittlesford as well!
