I've got 9 speed Tiagra on 1 of my bikes but need a new rear mech. Can I buy a 10 speed rear mech to work with the existing 9 speed set up?

Looking online, opinion seems to be divided, some say it's fine as it's the shifter which dictates how much the rear mech moves, others say no as 10 speed chains are narrower...

Anyone know the answer to this? And on the offchance, Anyone got a 9 speed rear mech they don't need?!

....Also, does anyone know what the difference between a Tiagra 9 speed road rear mech and a Tiagra 9 speed cyclocross rear mech?

  • 10 Speed Chains are narrower than 9spd.

Cyclocross vs road should be neither here nor there, do check for the cage length and make sure it either matches, or is longer (though that MAY need a longer chain).
