Upgrade Advice Jekyll Frame

Hi all. New to the forum. Looking on doing up a Dr Jekyll I have recently acquired. Not been riding for about 7 years so a bit rusty to say the least.
Bike has been thrown together with a load of rubbish parts so going to slowly upgrade everything. First of all previous owner has fitted a triple chain ring set-up on front and 8 speed at back. All deore stuff. Looking at starting with upgrading this. Whats the suggestions? Looking at single speed chain device on front. I have the original device. Is this any use? Here are some pictures.
