New brake hoses - lever end insert query

Installing some superstar brake hoses tonight. Can't for the life of me get the lever end insert fully into the hose. There is a 1mm (no more) gap between the cut end of the hose and the back of the insert.
Does that 1mm really matter? Looking at it another way, there is 9mm of insert inside the hose for the olive to crimp on...

so far I have managed it but on one or two occassions it was a right PITA - I did wonder if putting the end into hot water to soften the inner liner would help with inserstion - but didn't need to do that .... actually better idea  would be to heat up some brake fluid so that no water gets into the brake line.
