Maidenhead Cycling Club and the area

Any experiences? They seem fairly relaxed- eg not all racey- racey (although they seem to have TTs, harder rides).
I've just moved to the area and their club runs are the nearest to me, but if anyone knows of any other clubs/groups worth looking into round here i'd be most greatful! I'm just South of Maidenhead, more towards Ascot by the way.
I went on my second ride out in the area, staying pretty local, literally looking for hills to do- couldn't find many but did discover Crimp Hill if anyone knows it?!
If anyone has any general knowledge about the area eg good bike shops that would also be great.

It's worth checking out Windsor Great Park for some hills (though admittedly not very big ones). The 1948 Olympic road race was held on a circuit taking in some nice parts of the park. See this thread and this Strava segment. For proper hills, you need to head across the border into Surrey, where you've got Box Hill and Leith Hill.0

The chilterns hills are just by maidenhead. Box hill and leith hill are poor relations to these proper hills!0

Thank you for the replies
Ic1891; Never knew the 1948 road race was hosted in WGP. Will try have a go at the route, although i'll probabally get lost! Be nice to try the iconic Box Hill, from a quick search/ general knowledge i realise they aren't considered gigantic hills, but i'm sure it will be enough for my abilities (trying to get better at hills!)
Rodrego Hernandez: Nice to hear there are some good hills close by too, must go try them out, thanks!0 -
Thames Velo are also based out that way, and are probably more focused on Road racing. Maidenhead aren't bad though, very friendly. If you can over to Denham then there is normally a long ride (Quest and other west london riders) from the Nurseries, leaving at 9 on Sundays.0

I can highly recommend Maidenhead CC. I recently moved to the area myself and joined the mid-speed group that start from the clock tower each Sunday at 9am back in the summer and its a great bunch of people. We often do 40-50 miles with an average pace in the 16.xxMPH. Just good, enjoyable riding - often across a southern course around Windsor or a northerly course up to the Chilterns. I've stopped for the winter, but will certainly be back with the group in mid-Feb.
In terms of good bike shops you've got: 7Hundred in Windsor, AWCycles in Reading, Specialized in Ruislip and the ultimate jewellery store - its gonna bankrupt you - Sigma Sport in Kingston on Thames.
Hope that helps.0 -
GS Henley seem a decent crowd.
Have the South Bucks Road Club packed up?
Bit further, but best club in the world, High Wycombe CC!! Very active in all aspects of the sport. Plenty going on

Alright then, just this once: http://www.maidenheadcc.org.uk/.0 -
Here are a couple of routes I've used when I visit family in Surrey. The first one goes out to the Chilterns, then there's a little loop through WGP and up and down some local 'hills' , including Crimp Hill.

I'm not far from you in Ascot. As well as Crimp Hill there is Priest Hill and Tite Hill which are right next to Crimp Hill. The Chilterns the other side of Henley have some really nice Hills going up towards Watlington and Stokenchurch. Immediatly North of Maidenhead up towards Bourne End and Beaconsfield there are some reasonable climbs, Hedsor Hill, Kiln Lane(bad road surface though) Holtspur Lane, Windsor Hill and Wash Hill to name a few.
I've been looking at joing a club too, Farnborough seem a friendly bunch but I haven't been out on a ride with them yet but they have a number of club runs each Sat and Sun at different paces.

Thames Velo are a friendly bunch and have a Sunday club run that leaves at 10am from the Pond House pub in Maidenhead. They've got a website http://www.thamesvelo.org.uk0
