No, not that type...

Anyone else cancelled a ride due to high winds? We have 30mph with 40mph gusts in York.

Yep, got up and ready before I realised how windy it was. Gusting too which is never clever.

Ended up on the Turbo for an Hour.

Its more manageable if you work out a route with a headwind on the way so you get the tailwind on the way back.

I'm not quite sure you understand the term 'gusting'. Keeps changing direction as well you see.

But yes I do often go out when its windy, it was purely the gusting that made it unsafe.

No, that's called shifting. Gusting relates only to speed.

I don't find gusts to be a great problem. Maybe a little dramatic if they catch you side on. Strong head winds are a pain though, especially on the home leg when you're fcuk'd.

It annoys me most when I have to pedal down a hill. Yes down.

    Happened plenty of times.

Been waiting 4 days for it to stop raining.

Christmas meal today so I doubt I will be on the bike today anyway. :D

Well I braved it this morning and went out anyway but in all fairness I don't think we had gusts that fast, although it was bloody windy!
  • I am not sure how often (if at all) the conditions will be okay for riding in the next couple of months so I wasn't going to let a bit of wind put me off today.
I had a pleasant enough Club Ride. A bit of flooding in places and a bit breezy but I have been out in a lot worse this winter.

Respectfully suggest that the OP should MTFU :D

  • Must admit I also took advantage of the dry day to just go and get some fresh air before Christmas... Ended up doing 26 miles and it was tough going in places... My strava segment times were slow as well which must be down to the wind! Not that they were particulary fast to start with but even bloody worse today !!

Pfft. That's no so much. I went out up past Bolton Abbey and had a harsh climb into the wind over to Embsay via Eastby Crag. But then the lovely tail winds made up for it. 100k all in and it really wasn't too bad. You missed out.

While I accept that some of you may be in parts of the country that had positively 'dangerously' high winds generally you need to just get out and ride, rain/shine/windy (or a combination) you never know what you will be presented with come race day. Better to have practiced in all conditions first.
I fine some of the problem is in the mind, it is so frustrating to look at your speed and know it is so far off what you usually do yet the effort is probably more.
Due to having to take my daughter to work early and the pool not opening until 8.00 it was a 5mile run, 2k'ish swim backed up with a windy/wet 80k on the bike. But job done and winter miles make summer smiles (I hope).

    +1

Just went out from Scarborough over Dalby forest... windy as f**k. All headwind and gusts. The way back was effortless :D

Wasn't going to miss out on riding on the one day this week that it looked like it wasn't going to pour down. Think i'll go out again later.
  • 53.5 miles for me today :D

Tailwind on the way out cruising at high 20 mph's easy :)

Headwind all the way back :|

Good for the soul, but not the legs
  • I have segments that go in opposing directions. If the wind is against me on one then it's with me on the other!! Winds for me = PB's on certain sprint sections. Yesterday I have a nice ride and even managed a KOM!

Went out yesterday morning to take advantage of the dry weather, but I'm afraid I wimped out a bit and knocked the last 5 miles off as I was knackered (still quite new to this game and a prolonged headwind is still enough to do me in just yet  ) Still got a few miles under my belt and certainly worked the legs, so not a total loss

    Plenty out and about though!

Yesterday was a good day for a club ride, we made good use of each other for our club run with regular changes on the front to keep it fresh. Just wished it wasn't always my turn on the front when going uphill into the wind!
