Hi,

had some problems with a snapped b axle on my 105 rear derailleur so thought i might as well upgrade to Ultegra.
The bike is a 2011 Cannodale Synapse alloy and levers are 105.
Is it OK to go for a straight swap or do I have to change levers as well?

    If it's 5700 105 a 6700 Ultegra rear mech will work fine.

Any Ultegra will replace any 105 happily -

+1. All shimano 10 speed rear mechs are compatible with ALL shimano 10 speed shifters/chains.

Buy D/A in the sales - squillions times better and will work no worries with existing shifters.

<exits stage left as he realises that he has opened up the whole Ultegra/DA argument again .....>

I think DA may be a step too far on an Alloy Synapse? In all seriousness, a 5701 '105 is £39 on Merlin, An old Ultegra £50, a newer type £62. They newer '105 is probably equivalent to the older Ultegra, they will all shift exactly the same, just they get lighter as you go up the range. Personally I'd just go for the 5701 '105;-)

Never go too far when seeking that lovely smooth DA shifting action :) In all seriousness, if its his pride and joy and he loves the feel/ride/fit of teh frame and a) intends to do the miles and b)doesn't want to get rid of it, then whack some cheaply a cquired DA on it and enjoy .......

If he then upgrades the frame then just change the DA to the new bike.

    But thats just me .......

I don't think that there's much between the shifting of 105/Ultegra/DA, I've ridden bikes with crappy shifting DA and great shifting 105, it comes down to the way they're set up, what you pay for is lightness.

DA shifts, 105 waffles. Ultegra does neither as its neither here nor there so I personally wouldn't bother with that option.

But thats just me. And the pro peloton. And errr, most other people who are lucky enough to be able to choose whether to buy a top flight groupset, so lets not enter into that little emporium of angst ......

Depends on how pro you are and what your contract says/what you can negotiate at the end of the day ...... But they will still opt for DA/Super Record/Red of they can/have to spend their own wedge. Which is why Ulrich et al used to buy their own Obermayers and cover over the Lightweight stickers on them.
