Chain skipping- Replace chain?

Ok, recently my rear shifter broke. So while I wait for the new shifter, I have been foolishly cycling in the highest gear on the cassette. My chain is skipping every time I apply force.
I have bought a new chain, and am waiting for it to come. My bike is around 13 months old, done a fair few miles.
Will changing the chain fix my problem or will i have to buy a new cassette as well?
Thanks

Probably. The chain and cassette wear together so if you put a new chain on it will probably not mesh well with the old worn cassette.
This also causes the cassette to wear faster so is a false economy.
You can get wear checking tools or just measure with a ruler. 12 complete links should be 12" long. If there is less than 1/16 stretch then it is fine. 1/16 - 1/8 then the chain is worn but the cassette will be okay. 1/8" means you'll need both. That's according to Sheldon and IME works well.I'm left handed, if that matters.0 -
Yes, I went to my LBS they said the chain is stretched but did nit say anything about the cassette. I shall replace the chain and see how it goes. If it still skips I shall have to find another 45 quid for a new cassette.0
