Edinburgh to Dublin

Hi guys

Has anyone done the Edinburgh-Belfast-Dublin route in the past (with a ferry ride from Troon-Larne)? A couple of friends and I are planning on doing this in Sept 13, and there doesn't seem to be many publications on the details of the route.

If anyone can share any links or National/Regional Route Numbers that would be great. The only success I have had is Belfast-Dublin along Route 9.

The route apparently goes something like this:

Edinburgh-Lanark-Troon-(ferry to Larne)-Larne-Belfast-Banbridge-Newry-Dundalk-Dublin

there seems to be different options between Belfast & Dublin, Route 9 takes you Belfast-Lisburn-Craigavon-Portadown-Newry etc.

Any thoughts/info welcome.

Thanks

  • Hi Zimdog,
The Main Belfast to Dublin route is a motorway and you allowed (& shouldn't) cycle it!
Try contacting the Maracycle people at cooperation Ireland; they organise a charity ride each year and should be able to advise you on routes.
    Regards,
    Donncha.
  • Thanks Donncha - definitely not planning on motorway :) will contact the people you recommend, ideally looking for National/Regional Cycle Network Routes so we can keep to quiet country roads. Thanks
  • Beware of the country roads in Ireland, they drive like loonies (not all of course). beware especially of blind corners. In addition the roads tend to be poorly maintained so extra vigilance is required for potholes etc. hop this helps.
