So today i went on only my second ride since a hernia op and ended up having a pretty big off.

Started out and was amazing sunshine, lovely and warm and was actually cursing myself that i had put too many layers on. Perfect day for a nice ride in the countryside i thought...

25 miles in and i remember going down a small hill heading towards a right hand bend but cant remember anything else. Next thing i know im waking up with an elderly couple by my side, sitting on the side of the road by a bridge.
Despite them wanting to call an ambulance i refused, was more concerned about my bike! (have since been checked out by dr). Big thank you to them both though. Made me a lovely cuppa and insisted on bringing me all the way home.

The bloke told me that on the right hand bend i came off on there is gravel all over the road and a huge pothole on the left side of the road, and also said it was all covered in ice. Apparently i hit the floor and skidded straight in to the small bridge head first.

So whats the damage, well most importantly the frame (aluminium) seems ok. paint is chipped but havent found any cracks yet. Shifters are both gone. Left shifter is in pieces, right shifter is bent and wont function.
Wheels are both badly buckled. Rear mech is pretty smashed in - cant tell if its working or not because of the shifters not working. Saddle shredded. Helmet gone as well (thank god i was wearing this!!).
Nice almost new set of tights shredded, and my favourite castelli jacket ruined as well.

Guess i should be grateful though because i seem to have escaped without any broken bones.
Have mild concussion, lots of road rash all down my right side and side of my face, and a huge lump at top of my thigh which dr thinks is just bruising (although if no better by the morning have to go to a&e).

So anyway, if any body has any spare shimano 10speed shifters they would like to sell cheaply i would be eternally grateful!

And finally, just want to say, be careful out there people! Even in dazzling sunshine and with the temp close to 10c, pot holes and ice still lurk where you least expect them.

That's all crappy - best of luck with the recovery. Shiny new bike bits needed I think.
  • Sorry to hear bud! - Hope you make a fast recovery..

Why is it the first reaction is always to go and check on your pride and joy.. hope it's not too badly damaged and won't cost you an arm and a leg to get back up and running :)

    Happy Crimbo!
  • I know British Cyscling covers you for personal injury etc, but is there no insurance that covers damage to the bike?

Just how bad was the road? Was it bad enough to be dangerous to road users?

Didnt really notice tbh. I was out of it and when i came round the people who helped me took me in to their house.
Im going to drive up there tomorrow and take them a box of chocolates and will have a look at how bad the road condition is. Although i guess the ice may not be there (unless it freezes tonight) but the pot hole will.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
Like i say, just be careful out there at this time of year.

Oh, couple more things, i have a bell sweep helmet (had), does anyone know if bell offer any type of accident exchange?? (think i read that a couple of helmet manufacturers do).

Also, i have been given a 10 speed right shifter from a club mate, so just need a left shifter. Will any shimano double shifter work? or does it need to be a 105 or ultegra shifter?
