Strava Segments?

Can someone tell me how the segments work. Do they take your average speed of that segment start to finish or your maximum speed in that segment?

    Average speed, but the performance profile shows speed variations along it.

    Your top speed at any one point in the segment is irrelevant, it's how long it takes you to complete the whole thing. That's why the leaderboard is sorted by time.
    What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

    Also why some with some segments, the traffic gods have a large influence, best to see these as fun and not too serious.
