Did you guys get a basic bike fit as a minimum with your new bike purchase when collected in store

What to ask and look out for as a newbie

  • Yes, in a word.
    Pride and joy: Bianchi Sempre
    Commuting hack: Cube Nature
  • Yes here too. It was quite basic though. Not convinced anything except the saddle height is right. Well, right for me I mean.
    Is the gorilla tired yet?

    Thanks

A friend bought his and I know they swapped his stem around to change angle etc

But apart from saddle height was thinking what about saddle vertical movement and stem etc

  • Most stores will do a basic set up for you, if this appeals then factor this is in of course, some stores focus on the fitting more than others, although the free set up will be more basic that a full fit it is still preferable to have someone more experienced set the bike and your position up for you.

Also it depends on the bike to an extent, for someone collecting a £300 hybrid bike wearing jeans, trainers and flat pedals the fit will not be as accurate or as thorough as someone collecting a £1199.00 Specialized Roubaix sportive bike with clipless pedals and in cycling kit for example. Also worth bearing in mind that an experienced fitter will inform you how to evolve your position as you evolve as a rider, your long term goals and how the bike may differ from the rider you are now to the rider you want to be may evolve to a different position as you near your goals; this will also be a valid conversation to have when making your initial product choice of course.

I was told by cycle surgery it will only take 5-10 mins as all they do is adjust saddle hight

    So will see

  • Errr, that isn't a bike fit. Thats what you call shoddy service & unprofessional!! A proper bike fit will take at least an hour & should include cleat position, knee alignment, saddle height, saddle to bar measurement, saddle to bar height, saddle to bb measurement...and that for starters. You may need different saddle type, bar length, stem length or seat post lay. I had mine done at Sigma Sport in London & it took 2 hours, they were brilliant & it totally transformed my riding. Quality service & money very very well spent. Seek out somewhere who offer a specialist bikefit service. You will not regret it. Avoid any commercial shops attempting to fit you up, ie Evans, Cycle Surgery, etc. They just want your money & want you in & out as quick as poss. It's the commercial revolving door. Good luck.

But was your fitting an optional extra
I know bike shops offer different levels of fit and done in price brackets, but surely buying from a shop should have some advantage and include a basic level fit?

I was looking at climb your bikes and the guy on the phone sounded great as e said would change stems, bars etc for like for like as part of the fit on a normal bike sale

  • No, i had it done after i bought the bike at a different shop (who incidentally had claimed to size it up for me - yeah right). If they adopt actual bike fit procedures & claim to use a recognised system (ie specialized BG fit or similar) or have been trained in it, then crack on. If not, i would stay clear. If you pay up & it turns out they give a cr*p service & fob you off with a very basic inadequate bike fit, you might just have to pay for a proper one anyway. Find out about it before you agree to anything & then see if you can find any reviews of the bike fit service on here or on the web. Don't get sucked in by sales pitches!!!!
